CrossOver Games plans for July
2008-07-03 10:49
Hello,
In the past weeks we have been working hard on getting CrossOver 7.0 out the door and help on the Wine 1.0 release. Now that both are released, we are are continuing our work on CrossOver Games.
Today we have released a new unsupported build, and we are heading towards a new supported build.
In the next days we plan to fix the HTML and Guild Wars bugs remaining in the unsupported build, and then start a beta test for a new supported build. This new build will not have support for new games, but it will have some bugfixes and code based on Wine 1.0 and potentially run unsupported applications better.
Once this is done, we will turn our effort towards supporting more applications. So if you have not done so already, please vote for your games in our application database, since your votes and advocate activities are our main guidelines when deciding for new applications. We are considering Lord of the Rings Online since there is a lot of activity on this game and our .NET work is going forward. The currently top voted unsupported game is City of Heroes, so we want to look into this as well. Beyond that I want to take a new look at new high end games like Call of Duty 4, Age of Conan and dxlevel 95 support in Half Life 2 based games to get a new idea about the current state of the Mac graphics drivers. I cannot promise at this point that we will get all this going, but that is certainly the direction we are going to go.
Have fun,
Stefan

on this build i launch hl2 and i get the white screen but hear the background music it stays on the white screen for about 2 minutes then exits.
is there any work around?
you have any suggestions to run hl2 on crossover games?
i read the forum about the issues with cxgames and i tried both unsupported builds.
they did not work..
are these the nightly builds you were referring to ------>crossover-games-demo-7.0.080415-unstripped.dmg
and crossover-games-demo-20080702-unstripped.dmg?

Hi,
The 20080702 is the new build I am refering too. However, please use the unsupported build forums for any troubleshooting questions, or the ticket system/general HL2 forum.

It's the only windows game wine can't run really good (it has some glitches) which I am interested in buying right now, so including support for it would make me interested in buying crossover games (unless you merge the good back into wine that is, offcourse )

Hi,
there's not been any updates on Crossover Games since July... we're December now :|
For this blog I'd personally be interested in:
- which new games have you got to run recently
- what are some of the problems you had to overcome/are struggling with
- the work you are doing to make the installation&configuration easier and more efficient (to get them games up & running as easily and as playable as possible)
Keep up the good work!

Hi,
Caron kept posting quick status summaries to the general forum, and I didn't have much to add to that, so I didn't post anything. But to answer your questions:

We have been working on Lord of the rings online, warhammer, left 4 dead, city of heroes and Spore. As far as older games go, we have worked on improving Steam(javaScript, chat functionality, buying games, and an attempt to fix the in-game overlay on our side, with partial success). With the new games we did not have much luck yet. The .NET runtime for lotro installs and basically runs now, but there are some bugs and .NET is hell to debug, so we ship without it to get the Steam work out.
Warhammer is pretty buggy itself, so we probably won't support it(If the game fails on windows, its the game's fault. If the game fails the same way on CrossOver, it is our fault)
Left 4 Dead has major performance problems which are architectural in opengl, and we'll need some major work to overcome them. So we'll probably delay it too.
Spore works, and we already shipped an unsupported build for it
City of Heroes runs into driver bugs and we can't work around them because it uses opengl and talks directly to the mac drivers(usually a good thing, unless it runs into bugs)

Basically we try to make Wine as good as possible, so the installation and running works without configuring fancy hacks

well, recently I've been trying to run a couple of things, but in order to run it you have to manually enable some things like 'pbuffer' or 'fbo' or mess with the registry. Obviously, I have no idea how *that* works... ideally, wine would detect if it needs backbuffer/fbo/other stuff and configure itself that way... or maybe that's not possible?
