Does even a single page document containing only a few fonts generate a large PostScript file?

not excessively large but already too large. a.doc & b.prn with wine
postscript driver
examples are attached.
this gets worse if I don't use the standard printer driver! (b.prn)
in this file it is cleary the font matrix that gets huge.

Please let me add that these large print files are small in word2000 on
windows.

With word2000 on windows it's probably not downloading the font but using a font subsitute. If you turn this off in the windows printer driver options (or use a font other than the standard times, arial, courier etc) then the windows output will be bigger, probably not as big as CrossOver's though.
I'll see if I can come up with something.

where do I turn this off?
Why is it so different for different printer drivers?

Is this problem gone under word XP?
Do you expect to see a different story under word2k/windows vs. word2k/wine ?

It depends on which windows version and printer driver you're using
Try going to Control Panel, Printers, right click on the printer and
selct properties, then look in the advanced or driver configuration
tab from font subsitutes.
> Why is it so different for different printer drivers?
Different printer drivers do it differently.

Nope, it's a OS level thing.

That's what we're comparing. With all font subsitutes turned off then
for 1 page docs the size may be similar. However for > 1 page windows
will be smaller, because it doesn't always download the fonts for
every page like wine does. The disadvantage is that you can't jump to
a random page in 'gv' for example like you can with the wine generated
PostScript.

Are there any switches in wine to change font substitution?
BTW: ps2pdf creates reasonably small pdf from these huge ps-files.

Not yet.

That's interesting. I suspect that's a combination of compression and
that the glyphs are missing their hinting information in the pdf
files.
