CX Version: 4.1.0-std
Application: CrossOver Office Setup/Installer
Distribution: SimplyMepis

Note that SimplyMepis is based on Debian testing. For support purposes, it is probably indistinguishable from Debian testing. The window manager is KDE.

I removed cxoffice 4.0.0 from my account and installed 4.1-2 as root, then reinstalled MS Office 2000 and IE6. I now have no Windows Applications menu.

As per the FAQ I deleted ~/.gnome2/vfolders/applications.vfolder-info

 501 > ls -l ~/.gnome2/vfolders/applications.vfolder-info
ls: /home/neil/.gnome2/vfolders/applications.vfolder-info: No such file or directory

This has not helped. I have logged out and logged back in again. The file has not been recreated (should it have been?).

I've found the "recreate cxoffice menus" button in cxoffice setup, which has recreated the file, but I still have no menu options for MS Office or IE. I have also tried to install WordPerfect Office 2000 and I have menu items for this under the applications folder, but the Windows Applications folder I had in the menu when 4.0.0 was installed locally is still missing.

I've realised that the WordPerfect Office entries re a red herring because there is an old, non-working installation of WordPerfect Office 2000 for Linux.

I've also remembered that the Office installation produced some error messages about being unable to create links. ISTR that it asked me to check the required folders exisit, without telling me which folders are required.

These errors do not explain why I have no menu entries for IE6.

If I try to run the repair option from cxoffice setup/repair the installer is unable to access the CDROM. It asks me to insert the CDROM and press OK, so I do and it goes back to the same prompt. If i browse for another location, it will recognise the CDROM, but can't see a file of the type it's looking for, i.e. .msi on the disk.

If I mount the cdrom from Linux this problem goes away.

This isn't necessary for a normal install.

This error is very strange. I suspect the reason why you don't get menus is that the Windows applications did not create any, rather than a failure of CrossOver to transfer them to your KDE environment.

The way to verify that would be to check the contents of the following file:

~/.cxoffice/dotwine/fake_windows/Windows/Icons/icons.db

One thing you can try is to do a Simulated Windows Reboot as this step is involved in the menu creation, and recheck to see if you have menus or if the above file is fuller. The other check to do would be to see whether you have any .lnk file in your CrossOver Windows environment:

find ~/.cxoffice/dotwine --iname "*.lnk"

Let me know what you find for these checks.

that file seems to be practically empty.

The simulated reboot did not increase the size of icons.db and 'find found precisely nothing.

Ok, that explains why CrossOver created no KDE menu.

And this explains why the icons.db file is empty.
Now what's very wrong is that Microsoft Office 2000 and IE6 created no menu at all. Maybe the answer will be in this file:

~/.cxoffice/dotwine/fake_windows/Windows/Temp/Office2k.log

There might be an answer in there, but it's 2200 lines long and nothing strikes me as obviously relevant.

I've extracted all the lines with "err" in, as the most likely ones to contain some kind of clue.

Could you attach the whole file to a reply to this email?

Something went wrong during the reboot phase. Does it help if you manually invoke 'Simulate a Windows Reboot'?

No, I've tried simulated reboots and they've made no obvious difference.

According to Mike there's a problem with the IShellLink registration in your registry (the part responsible for creating the menus). Did you install any other applications? Which ones?

Unfortunately the only solution is probably to try to reinstall from scratch.

Only IE6 and Office 2000.

That mostly worked. I got an error about not being able to initialise the
cache, apparently from the IE5 component of the office 2K install. In spite
of that things seem at first glance to be working OK.

Yes this is a known issue we're working on. As far as I know it's does not cause any problem.

> In spite of that things seem at first glance to be working OK.

Well I'm happy things work better now. I'm also annoyed that this looks like a random bug which means it will be harder to find out what went wrong.

So I'll be assuming that things work fine now and thus close the ticket. If I'm mistaken don't hesitate to reopen it (e.g. by replying to this email).
