When I open a mail message in notes, the header section takes more than half
the screen, with the header information located in text boxes that are
relatively widely spaced (vertically). is there a way to reset the appearance
of the header frame, its graphic, and associated address information?

Could you start notes like this
~/cxoffice/bin/notes --debugmsg +font,+xrender,+text --cx-log leo.log.gz
when it starts, open a mail message and then quit notes.
This should have generated a file leo.log.gz, could you send that to
me as an attachment in reply to this email
Many thanks,
Huw.

The log you sent me (by private email) shows that client side font rendering
isn't working for you. Could you run these commands:
xdpyinfo > xdpy.out
ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib > ls.out
these should generate two files; xdpy.out and ls.out. Could you send them to me
as a reply to this email?
Many thanks,
Huw.
