Can I install Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 2 or later in Crossover?
Crossover's designed so that there actually isn't any underlying Windows operating system, it's more of a fake Windows environment that translates commands from Windows programs to your native operating system and back. This is why Crossover is less expensive than using an emulator like Parallels, VMWare, or Boot Camp. An emulator pretends to be a blank PC and needs a full copy of Windows to run IE6 or any Windows applications at all.
The downside to our approach is that service packs for IE6 (even IE7 is installed as a service pack) have to be applied to the actual Windows operating system. Since Crossover is just a translator there isn't any underlying operating system to update, so the service packs fail. Along with that you can only install these service packs after your computer passes the Windows Genuine Advantage hardware check application, which isn't present in Crossover and would be illegal for us to bypass or workaround (thanks DMCA!).
Several real estate websites (notably MLXchange, Tempo, and other MarketLinx products) which are not compatible with Internet Explorer running Crossover. These websites restrict their use to Internet Explorer service pack 2 or later and in doing so force you to use a full Windows operating system on either a PC or an emulated environment.
