The Marketing Blues

What’s giving marketing the blues this time of year when the sun is shining and the weather is sweet? Preliminary results of an A/B test we are running. Marketing is no stranger to unexpected A/B test results, like last year when our testing revealed that men don’t like buying softwarefrom women, in our blog post Selling Software, Sexist Google Data and what the actual Hell, Peopleelling Software, Sexist Google Data and what the actual Hell, People.Luckily, the current head scratching data that has been presented to us isn’t of the sexist kind. It’s of the “that’s impossible sort.” Obviously not impossible, because it’s happening, but I have zero rhyme or reason as to why two converting pages on our website, when graphically treated similarly…

The Future of Technology? A CrossOver Android Follow Up

No one knows what the future of technology holds for sure, but many people, myself included, have a strong inclination that the future of technology will be more mobile. It’s not much of a stretch to claim that mobile technology will overtake PCs. In fact, most pundits, like Gartner Research, claim that’s already happened, and IDC believes that by 2017 that 87% of all connected devices will be tablets and smartphones. Is the future now? Are we living in the post PC world? What is the future of technology?I think the future of technology is convergence. Convergence is different technological systems evolving toward performing the same or similar tasks. This means that instead of having a smartphone, a desktop computer, a laptop computer, and a tablet that…

CrossOver Android - We Have Bribes

A year ago, we gave you a sneak peak at our CrossOver Android development. At GDC in March, we showed up with CrossOver Android supporting LIMBO and the Steam Client. And with Google’s announcement last week that Chromebooks will soon be supporting Android apps, we wanted to share that its very likely you will soon be able to run Windows applications on Chrome OS with CrossOver Android! Bear in mind that CrossOver Android is still very much a work in progress. We’ve spent the better part of the past two years building the framework for supporting Windows applications on Android, and it's far from finished. But to that point, we’d like to bribe you into telling us what you think should we should focus on for CrossOver Android development. For those…

Celebrating 20 Years

Twenty years ago this month, a fresh faced, much younger version of me started CodeWeavers. I had four goals:Do important and challenging workWork with people I respectHave fun at workMake lots of moneyWe have succeeded beyond my wildest dreams on the first three points. The jury is still out on the fourth point. Turns out making money when you give the bulk of your work away poses a real challenge. 😊A few years into our corporate life, about 1999, I decided that the problem I wanted to tackle was the stifling monoculture of the computing industry. I felt that a Windows only universe was boring, so our mission to help people use Wine to escape from Windows was born. We've been fighting that battle ever since. Wine is now a powerful technology; used…

May the Fourth, the Fifth, the Sixth Be With You

A long time ago in a blog post far, far away I absolved my inclination to watch Star Wars and left it up to the voting public to decide my Star Wars viewing fate. 80% of you responded that I should, indeed lose my Star Wars virginity. 173 days later, I have not made good on my debt. I’ve started countless blog posts riddled with excuses as to why I haven’t watched Star Wars. I’m constantly surrounded by mementos of my failed follow through. The Darth Vadar pajamas I lounged in all winter, light saber bubbles that filled the children’s Easter Baskets, the Chewbacca build-a-bear that finds the most vicarious hiding places, how any stick can turn into a gimer stick, Star Wars SPF in the skincare section, 23 Ways to Throw the Best Star Wars Birthday…

CrossOver 15.1.0 on Ubuntu 16.04

Ubuntu's latest release, Xenial Xerus, has been out since April 21.The latest long term stable release has been working for our testing purposes since the day it dropped but we had to get CrossOver 15.1.0 installed first. In this release, the Ubuntu Software Center is gone. It has been replaced by GNOME Software. While this will be a positive change for the distribution, it seems Ubuntu Software has a few hiccups. While the Ubuntu Desktop Team works to resolve these problems, we would like to make sure our customers can install CrossOver. Please download the trial version of CrossOver before starting these steps. Or, if you already have an account, please login and download CrossOver. The easiest way to get CrossOver installed with Ubuntu 16.04 is a little…

Marketing Sells Souls as an Excuse for Blog Neglect

The year was 2015. It was the year “Content was King!” And the CodeWeavers Marketing Department had our most successful year blogging in company history. Thirty-one blog posts to be exact. We cranked those babies out: Technology issues, lying salesmen, marketing rock stars, sexist Google data. You name it: we blogged it.That was then. This is now. We’re now into the second quarter of 2016 and we have shamefully only produced one blog. And we’ve been shamed by this. And introspective. And, as a result of much internal self-examination, professional therapy, personal development and not a little drinking, we’ve come to a conclusion. The blog neglect isn’t really our fault. It’s Satan’s fault! Our writers block flows from the very same source…

With Leap Day upon us, many, many, many marketers are taking the opportunity of this quadrennial bonus day to exploit uniqueproducts offerings using puns, frogs and anything in-between to market to the masses.
