The Road Map for 2010

I thought I'd start the year fresh with a road map of what we hope to accomplish in 2010.

Early in the year, we plan to bring out 'Snow Mallard', our new platform for CrossOver 9. This is going to be an exciting release for us for a variety of reasons.

Our Linux users will be excited to see the first ever revamp of the GUI; folks that are weary of the TK look should enjoy the fresh new GTK interface. We also think the user interface as a whole is going to be substantially better, both for Mac and Linux users.  It should feel faster and cleaner.

Next, we're going to make a major shift in the way we approach applications. CrossOver 9 is going to include the concept of 'Application Profiles'; a way to describe a given Windows application and all of its dependencies and quirks. This is going to allow us to expand the user interface to take advantage of all of the great work that has been done in the community areas of our compatibility center. This way, if one person discovers how best to run an application with CrossOver, they can easily share that information with all other users.

Essentially, in addition to directly supporting a limited range of applications ourselves, we're adding the ability for our community to help dramatically expand the number of applications that 'just work'.

Additionally, CrossOver 9 will reflect a year's progress in Wine. This means more applications will run, and applications that ran before should run more cleanly. We're particularly focused on Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office. With proper support for Excel Macros and a number of other Office features, we feel that Office users will appreciate CrossOver 9 very much.

After we ship CrossOver 9, we'll quickly ship CrossOver Games 9, which will have the same core engine and updates to a variety of games. We're hoping the new system will enable us to more cleanly support Lord of The Rings Online, and we're looking to improve support for Modern Warfare 2, and perhaps some titles such as the upcoming Star Trek Online.

After that, we'll need to focus on Microsoft Office 2010, and we're going to continue our work on Office 2003, 2007, and Internet Explorer.

But more than likely, our year is going to be consumed by the changes we're going to start in CrossOver 9. The plan is for CrossOver to integrate directly into the Compatibility Center, so that tips and tricks can flow directly from the work of one of our Advocates into a simple and easy install for one of our customers. Hopefully, this will make it that much easier for our users to run an ever expanding pool of Windows software.

Finally, I want to repeat that none of this would be possible without all of the support we receive from our customers and our advocates. Thank you all; I hope we can continue to sustain our work on Wine and CrossOver and continue to deserve your support.

I'd like to see some better support for TF2, it's the only orange box game that doesn't run perfectly, i think it should be simple, since updating the code to make Source 2007 run well would help compatibility for the 2 HL2 episodes too. Thanks.

Not to start a debate or anything but I've had tf2 running just as well as any other Source engine games (even with my old x1600 card). The only source game that still has occasional issues is L4D2 but that game is brand new.

Will the brand new GUI bring an ability to run multiple versions of Crossover Office in parallel? Or at least Crossover Office and Crossover Games in the same profile?
This would be useful, pity if it isn't planned 😊

I would love to see UT3 gain "official support" via CXGames - I say this not only because it is a fantastic game, but because the UT3 engine is being used for many other games - meaning if UT3 gained support under CXGames we would see improvements for many other games as well (Killing Floor, Bioshock, ect). UT based games are the one area where CXGames is still sorely lacking compared to Cedega - they are the only reason I still load Cedega on occasion.

I got an email with the above back in 2009, and I promptly renewed and now it's 2010... I understand things gets delayed in software development, so I'm not ranting about the release date. However, I do think if you are going to link a release date with a sales pitch, it seems that it's good PR to deliver accordingly.

I've been hesitant in buying CrossOver Mac simply because the Solver/Data Analysis add-ins for Excel (2003 or 2007) have not been functional, as far as I could ascertain from the forum posts. As an engineering student, these two Excel add-ins are absolutely necessary for me.

I sincerely hope that your aforementioned improvements to Excel functionality includes these two particular add-ins. I really hate having to start up Parallels Desktop just for Office when I could be running it through the much leaner solution - Wine/CrossOver! And if it does work (well), then I'll be looking forward to becoming a new CodeWeavers customer!

I am a Ubuntu Linux user and I can't wait to see the revamped interface!


This should make things easier for ppl to accept and learn. Linux looks good, often even better or as good as a Mac or Windows 6/7, so it should also get a nice and clean interface in Crossover.

We've got plans to make customers that renewed last fall thrilled
about the delay by extending extra support.  When we ship, we'll
send you an email with details; write in if you feel our plan didn't work.

Jeremy, any thoughts on trying to support Access Runtime 2010 for CrossOver 9.x ? Since the runtime is slimmed and trimmed, maybe it would be possible? I would love to be able to push both Access Applications and CrossOver to my clients who may have mixed networks.

We think we have to support the new Steam GUI before we ship 9;
we've got it running now, but it's really slow.

As soon as we get it working reasonably, we're going to beta,
and we'll ship as soon as we can after that.
