CODEWEAVERS’ PROTON SOFTWARE SAUCE POWERS STEAM DECK
Hundreds of Windows games are now available for play via the Steam Deck, a portable PC gaming console, thanks to CodeWeavers development of Proton.

SAINT PAUL, Minn (Friday, February 25, 2022) — CodeWeavers®, Inc., is at it again. Together with Valve, they developed Proton for the Steam Deck. Proton is the compatibility layer that allows Windows® games to run on the Steam Deck’s Linux-based operating system, SteamOS. Proton and the Steam Deck have untethered gamers from their desks, freeing them to move about the cabin. As of this release, the portable PC gaming console runs hundreds of verified Windows games, and the list keeps growing. Starting at just $399, the Steam Deck has one of the largest software libraries of any handheld gaming unit. Check out the Steam Deck compatibility program.

“I believe, strongly, that the Steam Deck will become a real game changer in how we, as gamers, interact with video games and maybe Linux in the future,” predicts President of CodeWeavers, James Ramey. “There is an almost perfect balance between the hardware, which feels intuitive in your hands, and the software, which delivers an incredibly smooth experience and growing library of content for gamers. I am very humbled that CodeWeavers has had an opportunity to partner with Valve in creating this unrivaled gaming experience. And I am very excited at the potential impact the Steam Deck will have for gamers, for the video game industry, for Linux, and for Proton for years to come.”

Since launching in 2018, Proton has improved steadily. If you want to stay up to date on the evolving Proton landscape, bookmark Proton DB. It is a fabulous community-maintained resource with a list of Proton compatible games and an aggregate score of how well each game performs. Thanks to Proton, running Windows games on the Linux desktop has improved by (quantum) leaps and bounds in the last two years.

CodeWeavers has a proven track record of porting Windows video games. If you are a Windows game developer and want to get your game onto the Steam Deck, contact CodeWeavers to learn more about the process and how it will benefit your title.

About CodeWeavers
We're rebels. We're misfits. But mostly, we're software liberators. And we're very, very good at what we do. We have to be. Lots of developers work with open source, but only a tiny fraction of those are good enough to get software that was designed for one platform to work on another one. We invented CrossOver software - a completely unique approach to cross-platform compatibility that does not require dual-boot or another OS license. We launched PortJump to help app and game developers broaden their market beyond Windows® users. And we launched ExecMode to help Enterprise organizations solve really ugly technical challenges.
