Hi there,
As many folks will know, a lot of BigFishGames titles also have Mac
versions available as well -- they also have a Mac version of the Big
Fish Games Manager frontend GUI too. It would seem the default logic and
behavior of the BigFishGames website is to redirect any download you click
on to the Mac version of that game (if it exists).
I would recommend Mac users to -try- the Mac port of the game at least
once on their machines using the freely downloadable demo version of
the game for the Mac, and see if it works. As far as I can know, the
demo versions -are- the full versions, just time limited.
Installation of the win32 version of Big Fish Games Manager using
Crossover Games seems to coexist happily with the native Mac version
on OSX in my testing here. That said, I have found a few BFG titles
wherein the case is the Mac version does not work natively in OSX
for one or another reason ; at the moment, I'm speculating this is
related to exactly what video hardware your Mac has - my new model
iMac w/ HD5670 was hurling biscuits with a couple of the Mac titles
- the win32 versions do however seem to work fine using CXG instead....
So it's a case of "Try BEFORE You Buy" as far as I can tell. If the
Mac version works for you, great, use that and help support the Big
Fish Games Mac porting team - if you have issues with the Mac version,
you can then try to install/run the win32 version using CXG.
Note to Advocates: Where possible, always try to create any
C4P profiles for Big Fish Games so they download the -demo- version
of the BFG title in question -- these games will currently always need
to be run using CXG or wine (VM etc..) if you're using linux, but
including the demo into your C4P profile will help Mac users get around
the website logic of always pointing their browser to the Mac download..
...helps streamline the installation process. Always check if a Mac
port of the same BFG title exists ; if it does, you should indicate this
position in the C4 page's description field to alert people to this fact.
When doing C4P profiles for BFG titles. provide <installerglobs> for the
full download/purchase download stub, as this way allows both Mac and
linux users to easily 'try before they buy' and allow them to use the
same C4P profile for the purchased version. If the demo content has already
been downloaded, running the purchased version stub will hit the BFGM installer
routine, check for any client update and register the content already downloaded
correctly - so this saves folks a bit of time if you can do it - sometimws you
can't - a demo download doesn't exist.
Cheers!
edit: removed text wrt having to specify installerglob - I can't see it
being necessary once/if downloadurl is supplied.
