When dota 2 says "Update Required", steam crashes

I was able to succesfully install dota 2 but now whenever dota 2 says "Update required", and I try to click play, it says that steam.exe encountered a problem. Also, if I leave steam and don't touch it, it also does that. Offline mode works though. I have a mid-2011 macbook pro, 2.3 GHz intel i5 duo, Intel HD graphics 3000 384 MB running OSX lion.
