instability and total unusableness

my config: Ubuntu 10.10, Ati 4870 with proprietary drivers installed with latest ati-driver-installer-10-10-x86.x86_64.run from ati support page.

Eve Online starts well but after trying to switch on setup screen by "escape" key it gets stalled for about a minute and then goes well again for some time.
after three of four times of this it got stalled for ever making me to reboot my machine.

and another thing... this ugly white square under cursor appearing when i move over any menu :(
