Non GOG version of Far Cry?

I'm a total newbie at this Crossover stuff. I tried installing Far Cry several times with the Cross Tie link, but it always got stuck. Then I noticed this message:

"This crosstie profile currently facilitates the installation of the GOG.com release of Far Cry. Please download the installation file before proceeding"

Looking at the the DVD I see the names Encore, Ubisoft and Crytec... No GOG.

So what installation file do I need?
Where can I find It?

I have the game installed on a Bootcamp partition if that helps. (I really hate having to boot into windows.)

This is my first experience with Crossover. So far I'm a bit underwhelmed, but I'm willing to give it a few more chances.

Hi,

I have both the 5 CD version and the GOG.com version. The latter installs
correctly via the crosstie ; the former is documented in the Tips&Tricks
section here. I have no experience/knowledge about the DVD release at all...
so I cannot really tell you about that release, but, I imagine it will proceed
in much the same fashion as the 5 CD install (see the Tips&Tricks)...

...nor have a any idea what patch-level the DVD release is at, but if it's
not patched to version 1.40 you will have to do that manually, and, last time
I checked, the patching process only worked in mainstream wine, but, that was
some time ago now (crossover games 8 or such) ; I've no idea if the patch works
in current CXG or not...

There is some additional information over at winehq about the DVD version...see;

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=13613

Cheers!

Wow, Thank you for the fast response!
It would have been fun to play this game but it looks like I'll have try to install it later.
Right now I just want to get something - anything - installed and running. I really want to see this whole Crossover concept working but I think I'm starting to have buyers remorse...

But I'll keep on trying. ;)

...I just had another little snoop about ; the DVD release of FarCry
includes the 'Tages' copy protection system (disc based DRM) ; this
does not work in crossover/wine. The winehq link I posted above reminded
me of such, when I saw the installation notes citing daemontools...

..typically speaking, CD/DVD media is going to cause you trouble (and
then especially so on the Mac) most all of the time -- you should avoid
these media types if you can. I only have the 5 CD release by virtue of
the fact I bought it for my son years ago when it first came out. The
GOG.com version is DRM free, and far easier to install/work with -- you
don't have to patch it, you don't have DRM/disc issues, and various mods
available for the title seem to work...

IF you are only trying crossover with CD/DVD media, be prepared for many
disappointments ; most of them don't work due to disc based DRM. I liken
disc media to 5.25" floppy-discs ...'dinosaur technology'... pretty much
all games now are available via digital distribution (file downloads, like
the GOG.com version but there are many other distributors..ie; Steam, D2D,
GamersGate etc etc),.. crossover/wine deals with these distributions rather
well, and invariably work (...like the 300+ games I have all running in
crossover/wine)...

Cheers!

I have a version of the DVD release, which I have been able to get working. As I came to Crossover after significant experience with vanilla Wine, it was useful to be already knowledgeable with the way that Wine (and therefore crossover) handles a lot of the 'workarounds' needed to get certain software up and running.

Certainly check out the appdb page for Far Cry for some tips which may help.

As far the the copy protection issues go, Codeweavers does not endorse, support or condone any copy protection circumvention. But as Don mentioned above, crossover does tend to work quite well where there is no DRM involved.

HTH.

Yeah, funny you should mention that - I found Far Cry downloads on the GOG website and on Steam for about $10(US). I'll give that a go sometime in the near future.

My first thought was to somehow create an empty bottle then move my Far Cry Bootcamp installation into it. But even if that were possible, and I don't think it is, it would still need the DVD for DRM reasons.

I never heard of Crossover or Wine until today. I started reading in the General forums and I'm starting to get the basic idea.

Thanks again!

...don't buy the Steam version -- afaik, that release uses the online
version of Tages DRM which also doesn't work last time I looked...( wine
bug 10264) ...

..just to be clear, crossover/wine works okay with most (but not all)
online DRM system -- it is primarily disc based DRM that's a pain..see;

Thank you MoLE and Don! I finally got it installed and running! So far the graphics look good and the mouse and keyboard work fine.
Even though the link MoLE posted was the same one Don posted, it made me look at it again. I should have followed the advice I found there the first time.

I'm running Mac Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a 2.66GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo.
I'm using Crossover Games Version 10.1.2 (10.1.2).

This is what worked for me - YMMV:

-From the "Will install from FARCRY_1" tab, click "Choose Installer File…"

-Choose the "setup32.exe" file from the Far Cry DVD in the drop down menu.

-From the "Select a bottle into which to install" tab, select "New winxp Bottle…" and under "New Bottle Name:" type in "Far Cry".

-From the "Select an application to install" tab choose "Other Application"

-Click the "Install" button and the install will begin.

-DO NOT install DirectX or Adobe Acrobat Reader. Make sure both options are unchecked when asked.

-Use the default options on the rest of the screens and the actual installation will start. (It took some time and even though I thought it was stuck, it completed the install with no problems.)

-After it's done you are given the options to View the readme file and Register the game (I unchecked both boxes).

-Click the finish button.

-The Crossover Installer was still running, so after a while with no progress I clicked the "x" next to the progress bar and Crossover finished up the install.

Thank You again. You guys rock!

Good to see you got it working ... just so you know, I believe the
hang at exit after installation is due to the InstallShield helper
'iDriver.exe' hanging on (as mentioned in the Tips&Tricks); it's
present in the 5 CD release and at a guess the DVD uses the same
installer program (InstallShield).
