Applying official patches - a wine workaround

Note: You need the farcry 1.4 culminative patch to enable online play.
I have yet to check if this is working correctly or not - after I do
I'll spin up a tip&trick to make all this below easier to follow.

Update: After creating my ubi.com account, the online dialog
accepted my username/password, and then prompted me for the CD Key,
which...unfortunately...my son lost/misplaced long ago. I've emailed
the folks at ubisoft.com to see if I can get a replacement key...

Note: I did NOT install the punk-buster client during
the upgrade patch process - I am unsure if this is critical or not,
but it seems optional.

Note: All this below was done in linux - Mac users will need
to use other means to achieve the same ends.

If you're like me and would rather chew broken glass than use windows to
apply the official patches and copy that game content into your COG bottle,
then the following is of interest.

I noticed this information posted over at WineHQ;

"Due to a regression in wine, the patch msi installers might fail. To work
around this issue revert to wine-1.0.1, install the patch, and then revert back."

Applying that notion to crossover-games, will probably proceed like this;

Install wine-1.0.1
Install FarCry into the crossover-games bottle environment
Install FarCry into the wine-1.0.1 environment and apply the official patches
Copy the wine FarCry installdir content into the COG bottle installdir for FarCry
overwriting all files there with the patched content

Check your system.cfg file for sanity (see tips&tricks), and then try to
start the game using COG -- note: do not forget to remove/rename/delete
the 'FarCryConfigurator.exe' along the way (as explained in the tips&tricks)

Notes:

When you apply the farcry 1.4 culminative patch using wine-1.0.1, the patch
installer may hang upon completion of the file copy operation -- if this happens
to you, issue the following command in a shell/console ;

killall IDriver.exe

Then the patch installer should complete and exit correctly.

After applying the farcry 1.4 culminative patch using wine-1.0.1 and then
copying the contents into your crossover-games bottle you installed farcry
into, you may encounter the following issues when you start farcry using COG.

issue: after doing the above, you have no mouse control in game

solution: In the game, go to options=>control options and click on the 'defaults'
button to set all params back to default settings - your mouse should now work.

issue: after doing the above, you find all graphics in game to be very dark

solution: In the game, go to options=>video options, set the brightness/contrast
and/or gamma values to suit your setup, then click on apply.
