Ubuntu 8.04 and DX9 problem

I installed the .deb of CX Games a few days ago and it ran flawlessly with full DirectX 9 graphics from the first moment without needing any tweaking at all - amazing work! That is, until today. I've just updated my box from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 release candidate, and now if I try to run Guild Wars it hangs or quits before it gets to the login screen. If I switch the bottle to emulate Win98 mode GW will run in DX 8 mode. I know that Ubuntu 8.04 updated my nVidia drivers from 100.x to 169.12 - could this be a possible cause? I'd really love to get my beautiful DX 9 graphics back!

The 169.12 driver is working nice for me, in fact CrossOver complains when you use an older one. Maybe try to disable 3D desktop effects.

Already tried disabling Compiz - no change. Have tried everything else I can think of and it just doesn't work in Win2k or XP mode now, where it worked perfectly before.

Also the game seems to be running slower now in Win98 mode than it did in Win2k before.

Still no idea why DX9 mode is freezing my system now?

Not really - the glxinfo output looks ok.

Voroka reported some issues with Guild Wars extensions(or however they're called), do you have such a thing installed?

Guild Wars changes the rendering thread right after setting the display mode, which causes issues on some drivers(fglrx and intel namely). However, if that was the case, it wouldn't run in dx8 mode either.

Another thing you can try is to pass "-windowed" to the game to run it in a window, or enable the virtual desktop.

I downloaded the latest nightly build (20080427) and hey presto DX9 works again! The only problem now is that if I try to change from full screen to windowed mode inside Guild Wars (by pressing F11 and using the graphics tab) the screen will freeze - this used to work fine a couple of weeks ago. Still at least we're closer to a solution now 😊

The program voroka was referring to is TexMod, a tool that allows users to customise DX9 games. You can read about how it works with Guild Wars here:

It doesn't modify the GW binary or .dat files, it's more of a wrapper round the game, so once it's removed it shouldn't have any further effect on GW or CX Games.

I guess it hooks the d3d9 IDirect3DSurface9::LockRect function to inject different texture data. This might fail, depending on how the hook works. If it tries to modify the bytecode, then it will fail because the CrossOver implementation is obviously different than Microsoft's. If it provides its own d3d9.dll which loads an existing d3d9.dll and just wraps it, then it might work. However, CrossOver prefers its own d3d9.dll over a native one, so the hooking DLL might not load.
