Change .ini to get sound working

Navigate to (your Documents folder)/BioWare/Mass Effect and edit BIOEngine.ini

Add the following lines to the section labelled [ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice]

DeviceName=Generic Software
UseEffectsProcessing=False

This disables hardware audio and should get sound in the game.
