I cannot get Office XP to work under any circumstances

Using a 13" MacBook Pro, 16 gigs of RAM, 240 gig SSD, OS 10.7.3.

I tried Win98 bottles, WinXP bottles, Cross Tie from the web page, individually installing the programs, group installing, it either hangs up indefinitely or I get an error message. Sometimes I get to the Product Key step, most of the time I don't. Any suggestions?
