Office 2016 installs. Fails after 2nd or 3rd use of word
Posted 2018-02-04 13:46
Installing Office 2016 Pro Plus retail that I purchased through my company "home" use program using Crossover 17 on Ubuntu 14.04. It's a little confusing on the codeweavers site what is intended to work or not - is this supposed to work? The install file I get through this Microsoft purchase is Setup.x86.en-US_ProPlusRetail_<some letters>.exe, which is about a 4.5MB file - so fairly small. My Ubuntu is using the Intel graphics drivers.

- I created a new bottle and installed Internet Explorer 8 first into a Win 7 bottle.
- Then I used the Crossover "Install software into this bottle" option, and pointed the install to the above setup exe file.
- The installation seemed to work - it said it was complete.
- Word opens the first time, and allows me to save a new document.
- On opening word the second time, I try to do most anything, such as open the previous file, and it crashes saying it can't read the normal.dotm file. I then rename that file and open Word back up again later.
- Subsequently on the next opening of Word, it crashes after trying to save a file, with the following (I've deleted some lines that probably have no meaning as they are just numbers):

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x08455351 in 32-bit code (0x03a6983f).

It seems from your description that you did not use the Office 2016 CrossTie during installation.  CrossTies trigger certain changes to the bottle such as installing dependencies that are necessary to make your programs work.  The easiest way to use a CrossTie is to click the "Install Windows Software..." button and then search for your application (in this case Microsoft Office 2016).  When you select the application name from the drop-down list and then click "continue" you will be guided through the rest of the installation process using the correct CrossTie.  If you are still having problems after trying this installation method, please feel free to contact our support team for more troubleshooting.

Whoops!  One of my co-workers just pointed out to me that you DID use the CrossTie during installation.  Sorry for the mix-up :/  We have been seeing mixed results with the Office 2016 Pro Plus installer, and so your issues may stem from there.  I am forwarding your problem to our support ticket system so that you can be notified if we make any progress on the Pro Plus installer.

Hi Anna! Please tell me if you have any progress to me as well. I'd like to buy the registration for the crossover but only if Office 2016 works effectively with no crashes

Anyone can open a support ticket :)  There is a link near the top of every page on the forums that says "Contact Us."  This link leads to a form for opening up a support ticket.  Just include a link to this post in your ticket so that it can be linked to others who are having this problem -- this allows us to update everyone if a solution is found.

I am going to forward Daniel's post to the system, but I wanted to also leave a comment on this in case anyone else out there has this problem.

I just wanted to report some moderate success lately: I've upgraded to Crossover Linux 17.1, and installed IE8 along with my office 2016 into the same bottle. Before attempting to run Office for the first time after installation, I first right clicked on my bottle in Crossover and clicked "Open C: drive". I then created folders which aligned with this path:
For example, in my bottle I already had the AppData folder, but nothing deeper than that. So I created the Roaming, Microsoft and Templates subfolders as that path indicates through Ubuntu Nautilus. For each one, I set the permissions to full read and write for all of those folders using the Nautilus "properties" dialog.

After doing this, I then started Word and it started correctly, and even asked me to activate the product over the internet. Activation worked, and Word opened fine. I've been able to use complex Word documents without problems, even accessing my local Ubuntu drives and files stored there. I did not get any normal.dotm errors using this proceedure - at least yet.

I have not tried other Office 2016 applications yet (ie excel, outlook, etc), but I thought I'd report first what worked for me so far.
So far I would say the only downside is Word 2016 seems to run a bit slowly - ie it opens dialogs slowly.

If people seem to continue to get normal.dotm errors, be sure to change your permissions on the templates folder using the linux command line, rather than from Nautilus (if you're using ubuntu):
chmod 777 ~/.cxoffice/Microsoft_Office_2016/drive_c/users/crossover/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Templates

This seemed to eliminate my normal.dotm errors.
