Heya,
First lets get this out of the way. There is a bug in ubuntu 12.04 that affects some programs in weird ways. Open a terminal window and run this command:
echo 0|sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope
Tell us if this fixes things for you.
