update: There was a xorg-x11-server-7.6_1.9.3-15.24.2 update last wednesday for Suse 11.4 and it overwrote /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so. Reinstalling the Nvidia blob sorted the problem out.
[i]As of rift 1.2.1 hotfix #3 which just got patched the launcher can no longer launch the game.
