installation silently fails on 17.0.0

I'm trying to install Rosetta Stone 2.1a from the original CD under Crossover 17.0.0 on Ubuntu 16.04. Quicktime installs and the application installer starts, but then it terminates with "The installer has exited but Rosetta Stone does not seem to be installed".

There are no diagnostics associated with the App_Disc phase of the installation in the standard log (there were some for QuickTime); the extended install log is incomprehensible to me.

The application page says this was tested on 17.0.0; maybe 2.1a isn't supported?

Can anybody suggest a solution?
