Steamwebhelper.exe crashes

I purchased Codeweavers CrossOver for Ubuntu 14.04.3 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux version 14.1.6 64 bit and I installed Valve Corporation's Steam for Microsoft Windows. Steamwebhelper.exe keeps crashing every time I launch or exit Steam. What gives? Is this going to get fixed soon?

Let me fire up steam and see if I have any issues. I haven't loaded it up in ages so I can't say for certain if there is any issues. Frankly there shouldn't be.

OK I am seeing that too now. Let me look into this.

Ok found the fix.

This is a known issue for windows installs:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3134-TIAL-4638

To do this correctly under Crossover do the following:
1)Close out of steam completely.
2)Open up the Crossover window if its not up
3)Goto the "Tools" pulldown menu and select "Run Command"
4)Select your steam bottle from the bottle selection pulldown
5)In the Run box type:

steam://flushconfig

6)Follow the instructions

I'm seeing this error too. I just tried the flushconfig you suggested, but it's still happening. Any other ideas?

I have this same issue, Im running fedora 22 64bit.
I had this issue for a while now, it was previously occuring on 14.1.4-1 but I just upgraded to 14.1.6-1 today and this issue is still happening. I have also tried the flush config but it did not work. as stated above... any other suggestions?

Hi,

Is anyone able to generate a piece of steamwebhelper.exe crashing log?

It would be interesting to know whether we are talking about the same bug with this one:
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38960
Steam 'steamwebhelper.exe' based on CEF v3.2357.1273 - Chromium v44.0.2378.0 crashes in Win7 mode ('kernel32.SetFileCompletionNotificationModes' is a stub)

Thanks!

I've put the crashlog here

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/57467169/steamwebhelper_crashlog.txt

But I get the impression you're looking for an section of the log file. Do you want any particular log channels added?

here's one with none:

Hi David, thanks for the log, it is useful, by comparing your log with the log from Wine bugzilla, I guess they are the same bug.

Are you running your game in Win7 mode? According to the Wine bugzilla description, maybe using WinXP mode helps, but I'm not sure whether that is possible to you, anyway it might worth to try.

winxp mode still produces the crash. I've pasted my log below:

I've got the same problem here with Steam (WinXP mode) crashing at start and exit on Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon (x64). The flushconfig thing didn't help. Could you point me to where the logs you mentioned would be?

FYI: More recent version of wine (wine-1.7.50) with installed Gecko Engine than the one, which is shipped with CrossOver doesn't have this problem.

I'd be surprised if the Gecko engine as shipped with Wine is actually improving things since Steam uses webkit.

Ok, probably I was wrong :-/

I was having this issue across WinXP/7/8 bottles with CrossOver v14.0.3 for Linux. I just updated to v14.1.11 for Linux, and the issue is resolved.

Andrew Schott wrote:

No improvement. Anyone have any good news on this front?

Crossover 14.1.11 (14.1.11.28612) on Mac OS X.

Incidentally, I tried it under Crossover 15.0.0beta2, and it's still broken. 😕

Note: If you plan to follow Andrew Schott's recommendation to use steam://flushconfig, do yourself a favor and follow the instructions to the letter, including the detailed instructions on the url provided, https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3134-TIAL-4638

I had to go through it twice, because I failed to follow Andrew (and Valve's) instructions literally.

Incidentally, with respect to the subject of this thread: I'm up to 15.0.0beta4 with no change: I don't think this one's in CodeWeavers' sphere of influence.

Same issue.

I try it with two clean, new Windows XP and 7 bottles. Install from the "Install Windows Application" button, but they all crash after login and wait for less than 1 minute

Hope to fix ASAP...

Environment: CrossOver 14.1.11(14.1.11.28612), the official latest version. OS X El Capitan 10.11.1(15B42), the official latest version of OS X.

Fix? It solved on Linux but fail on OS X? Maybe the difference on Wine version.

From the Wine official support it seems only happen before Wine 1.7.6 and set to Windows 7 bottle, but CrossOver use the old version Wine and I try the Windows XP bottle also failed...So..I just hope the fix will come.

For me, I installed Steam around Feb 7 into a new bottle, experienced this crash on exit after the first launch, and after that haven't crashed again over 7~8 launches of Steam. If there's any config I might have that would help to share let me know.

Version 15.0.1 (15.0.1.29623)
OS X 10.10.5 (14F1605) | MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) | Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB / NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M

Well. I post this at Dec, 2015.On Jan 15.0 version release, but Steam it just still crash after some minutes.
But now after updating to latest 15.0.1 version and latest Steam version(Feb 9th update). It seems that all OK.
Launch, Login, Wait for 10 minutes, Browse the store web page(with introduction video), Download Game, Play. No more crash (I don't check whether streaming or in-game Steam UI can work, just the basic usage)

CrossOver 15.0.1.29623
OS X El Capitan 10.11.1

Crash Again... CrossOver 5.1.0 the latest version. OS X El Capitan 10.11.1

I am wondering if it's a bug about Chinese characters or language support for wine or that steamwebhelper in wine, here is the log start with debug mode. Try to fix it :(

At the risk of creating "me, too" noise, I'm still experiencing the steamwebhelper.exe crash under 15.1.0, and I'm definitely not running a Chinese version of anything, so it may not be rooted in the Chinese language, as the previous poster suggests.

Here's my crash log: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12383864/steamwebhelper.exe_backtrace.txt
