Telltale-downloaded game cannot be registered in CXG Linux 9.1.0 - Solved

So, huge sale this weekend. All five Tales episodes for $5! Could not resist.

The Demo works beautifully. This should be Gold! But I find no way of registering the game. The Tips&Tricks and forum posts don't seem to apply any more. Telltale might have changed the launcher/DRM thingy.

This is v1.0.0.15 of the game launcher. Like I said, the Demo button works. I didn't try the Buy button since I don't need to buy it twice. And clicking "Already paid? Unlock the full game" just hangs the app. Leaving it hung and running the app again (from its own directory or not) doesn't do any good.

Kind of silly, isn't it?

  • Download from Telltale: Known not to work
  • Steam: Gold
  • Gamer's Gate: Gold
  • DVD: Gold

Good thing the DVD is free (plus shipping) and I'm only in Canada. I've already paid my shipping and will patiently wait for my DRM-free version.

Edit: Successful registration requires wine registry hacks. They'll be coming to Tips & Tricks soon.

Edit2: Successful registration should now be possible by clicking "Install via C4P."

Hi,

Have a look at the C4P profile for app_id 6193 or 6194 -- you have to
install mshtml6 + change some registry overrides but that was working
fine a couple of weeks ago for the online registration/activation shizzle
with the TellTale games frontend....elsewise you can usually get CXO to
do it with one or the other of mshtml6/mshtml7/IE6/IE7 installed into
the same bottle...

Hope this helps...

Cheers!

Ooh, this looks promising ...

Maybe I'll adapt one of those C4P files for this game!

Hmm, I created a c4p for this, based on 6194, and I haven't been able to test it.

Do I need to publish it?

If I open 6194, then click Load, the fields "Select an application to install" and "Select a bottle into which to install" get populated, along with the app Description, Medal, and Installation notes.

If I open 5814, then click Load, nothing happens.

Hi,

I'm not entirely sure where this problem is creeping in -- I
haven't (re)checked 6194 yet but something definitely strange
is going on....ie; the c4p looks fine in the editor, you download
it and load it into your plaintext editor and it looks fine ; load
into cxinstaller and weird stuff like you describe happens - in fact
currently wrt 6268.c4p that c4p will load and display/install fine
on the Mac...in linux however it loads, but certain fields do not
get filled out....I'll have to take a closer look at things to find
out exactly what's at play here....

Cheers!

Update - it seems the ie6 installer has been pulled from the 'net.
That means anything based on using mshtml6/7853 is going to be broken
right now .... "Oh, bother" said Poo....

Cheers!

Please tell me it will just be a matter of changing mshtml6 dependencies to mshtml7? 😥

....I wish....I'm pretty sure I exhausted all options trying
to get mshtml7 to work here, but it would be easier if that
could be made to work somehow....also, I know the next CXG
version is going to have some more tweaks added to the cxhtml
engine, so I'm probably putting off rechecking this until the
next version beta appears (whenever that might be..)

Cheers!

evolt.org keeps a browser archive.

There is no IE6 SP1 standalone download, but there is a blank IE6 one here: http://browsers.evolt.org/download.php?/ie/win32/6.0/ie60.exe

Could we use that?

...no....I asked a Ninja about it, M$ have turn off the component servers
(the installer is just a stub that contacts M$ servers to grab the actual
software), and thus although you can still get the -installer- it still
isn't going to work...we basically need a 'full' legit standalone installer
(which I'm unsure if M$ ever released)....cough...what am I saying? We
need cxhtml/gecko to be able to do more ie6 based operations...that'd be
nicer... :D

Cheers!

I agree that a more compatible gecko would be nicer.

But in the mean time I'll try the above IE6. It's a 76 Meg file, so I think it's a good one.

I think I read somewhere that IE6 SP1 was the first to stop being completely redistributable ... I'll find that link.

Edit: Gosh-darn it. I never thought I'd be anything but elated the day that M$ stopped allowing IE6 installations. 😠

I'm told that Microsoft's servers are working again. It seems it was just a temporary glitch.

D'oH!....sorry, I just saw that ;)......I'm not sure how
functional that is (as in current)...but it seems now, the
component server is up again...that said, there may have
been changes made to those components...time for some more
testing I guess ;)

Sigh. Definitely conflicted about this. As a web dev, I'd like IE6 to just die. But as a CrossOver Games user, I'm happy to know it's still around if it enables me to play some games.

Anyway, I did find one article about M$ dropping standalone support. It's a CNet piece based on an interview posted in M$'s own site. But the source material's URL is dead. Here's CNet's write-up: http://news.cnet.com/2100-1032_3-1011859.html

I'm the same way, don't worry....I wish we could drop ie6
as well, especially in this regard when we're only using
fractions of it anyhow for a few 10s of seconds to enable
an online process to do it's thing...ie; it's not as though
any of the game software itself is needing ie6 perse, it's
just the distributors' frontend wrapper/delivery system
calling for it....like I say, I'll give mshtml7 another good
rattle when the next beta appears because afaik the telltale
game group is the only frontend/wrapper wanting mshtml6...

...there's some apps (not games) that are using mshtml6 as
well....umm...also note, that mshtml7 behaves differently
in CXO than it does in CXG...ie; most of the gamersgate
release installer stubs that don't with mshtml7 in CXG, do
work in CXO using the same bottle makeup...sigh...

Cheers!

Well, getting back on track, I manually followed the instructions in 6194.c4p, and it worked.

Now, if I could just get 5814.c4p to do the very same thing ... !
