Installation works but game does not start...

Hello!

How many people are actually using this game with CrossOver?
I find it always a little confusing that the installation process is for many games so poorly described.

I use CrossOver MAC 8 on my MacBook Pro.

I did the following:
1) Created a new bottle (XP)
2) Installed the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" (which I have downloaded from Microsofts homepage before).
3) Installed "Steam from download" - german version... but who cares...
4) Installed "The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition" from Steam. (I've had bought it already.)
Installation worked fine. I did not encounter the problem described by others with the DirectX installation bug.
5) Steam tells me that everything worked fine. If I try to start it nothing happens. NOTHING!!!

Anybody who can give me point per point instructions how he installed it (successfully) is VERY welcome.

Thanks,
Florian

Here's what I did.

1) Created a new Steam bottle (with Steam from download).
2) Installed Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package ( http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?familyid=32BC1BEE-A3F9-4C13-9C99-220B62A191EE ) AND Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package ( http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?familyid=200B2FD9-AE1A-4A14-984D-389C36F85647 ) in the Steam bottle.
3) Installed "The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition" from Steam.

That's all and it works great (for me).

Good luck!

Which version of CrossOver are you using? Which kind of bottle did you create (OS)?

I'm using 8.0.0.
The Steam bottle "creates itself" automatically in Windows XP (I'm not given a choice if I choose to have it installed in a New Bottle, which I did).

It also worked for me now in Crossover Games for MAC 8.0.0.
I guess I simply missed to install also Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package ( http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?familyid=200B2FD9-AE1A-4A14-984D-389C36F85647 ) in it before.

Thanks for your help!
:)

I try setup Monkey Island.
I installed the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" and sp1 also.
Installed steam and monkey island from backup, but when I first time launched the game Directx setup started, but nothing happened, game did not start.

kenand, note the difference between "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" and "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Service Pack 1". You need the SP1 redist.

(Steam tries to install the .NET 3.0 runtime, which also contains the MSVC 2005 SP1 redist, but the .NET install fails - that's why you have to install the msvc redist manually)

So:
First must I make an XP bottle

  1. must I setup "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" SP1
  2. Steam
  3. install Monkey Island SE from backup

When start first time from steam, Directx setup started, but game did not start.
If I click again directx setut start again
( I saw log and se an error)
Exit error()1 "C:\program Files.......Dxsetup.exe /silent

Must I setup directX manually?
(I tried but did not help)

I use CrossOver 8.0 pro

Before you install Steam directx will be installed for you.

It should be enough if you add MSVC 2005 SP1 to the existing bottle, no need to start with a new bottle

  1. Must I setup MSVC 2005 SP1
  2. steam
  3. Monkey island from backup archive

Nothing more?

That should do the job as far as I remember.

It's a great shame but do not work for me.
I receive directx error.

I use CrossOver pro, I try Crossover games I saw built steam installation setup many additional software (XML Core Fonts, Flash, DirectX)

It's fact works with CrossOver games!, but not with CrossOver pro setup.

(And after setup cracked MISE.exe works without steam)

Try doing it in the order I described in my first (the second altogether) post in this thread:

1) Create a Steam bottle (with Steam from download).
2) Install the 2 Visual C++ 2005 redistributable packages (install SP1 after the other one) in the Steam bottle.
3) Install the game from Steam.

That should do the trick.

Pro do not provide built in steam setup.
I tried archived bottle - made with cross over games- load to Crossover pro.
Game started but send error message : graphic cards do not meet system requirements. And also send same error message with CrossOver games 7.1

I still cannot get it to work.

I used my existing steam bottle, installed MI:SE - didn't work.
Added VC++2005 and VC++2005SP1 to the bottle - MI:SE still won't work.
Backed up game files via steam, deleted local game content, re-ran VC++2005SP1 installer, reinstalled MI:SE from backup - MI:SE still doesn't work.

The game just does not start. After double clicking, steam tries to install DirectX and after a while the "installing DirectX" window disappears and... nothing.

Do I really have to set up a new bottle with a new steam install? I don't really like the idea of spreading steam across multiple bottles...

Hi,

One of the big things missing from this thread, are succinct details of
people's hardware specs...ie; platform/OS version/videocard model, ram...etc..

For example, you can't compare someone's results here using an Ati videocard,
if you're using a nvidia card (or viceversa for that matter).

You will get further debugging this, if there's more detail about what
systems specs work, and what doesn't work -- please consider recording
these details...

Cheers!

Hi !

Same error here : Installation works but game does not start...

What can i test to play this game with Cross Over games 10.0.0 ?

Best regards,

Vincent

This is an old thread. You probably should have started your own.

Any way, have you tried installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable?

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, i installed the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" package.

It is a better : i have a first window, with a bug message "audio config is not initialized or has not been found. The program will stop".

My bottle is "Winxp".
In the "wine config" of crossover, my sound driver is "ALSA". Testing sound works...

I know this game can work with my hardware, because it worked a month ago with a beta version of Wine (1.3.9)...

Is there a way to have some logs files to undersand the problem or to help developers ?

Best regards,

Vincent

You should be installing vcrun2005 from targets in the 'Runtime Support Components' area of the cxinstaller GUI...it is the vcrun2005-sp1 redist...

Cheers!

i think it is already done...

My installed applications are :

  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistribuable
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistribuable - x86 9.0.30729

Best regards

It works now !

I uninstalled Steam, then installed steam, installed package and installed the game !

It works perfectly now...

I will apply my gold rank to thix game :)

Thank you !

Best regards

I'm glad you got it working.

You should explore the CXG Installer (cxinstaller, or the "Install Software..." button in the Bottle Manager). A lot of software required by games already has installation targets in that window.

Enjoy!

Hi !

Do you know if Games on Steam have some Crosstie installer ?

I have about 6 games to test with Steam...

Best regards

Vincent

Installing Steam itself with the crosstie is definitely the recommended way.

Installing steam games with crossties is not as straightforward as it would seem. So, no. There are currently no crossties that would install a steam game for you.
