Anyone tried the G.O.G.com version?

Tempted to buy as it's on sale right now.. but not sure how the gog version runs through crossover games

Yes, installed and tried it just now (CrossOver games v 10.2)and here the results:

The game gets to the intro screen where it loads whatever it loads behind the area display then the display goes black to switch to the first ingame cut scene (where he is carried on a cart) and crashes. The very first time it got a little past that to the witcher watching the others train.

I then ran the game via the run command and created a log. Here the Threads and Backtrace section from that (options +seh):

I also got the following text in a dialog on top of the run window:

I installed the witcher as follows:
1) the package asdownloaded from gog.com. After that, witcher wouldn't run at all so I read through the documentation and some msgs in the gog forum and found that there had been problems with DirectX9 so I then
2) installed Directx 9 from here which got me to the point I am at now... just as a test I also installed DirectX Runtime Modern which didn't change a thing (yes, I have no idea which version or flavour of which particular DirectX is the right one for anything :) )

Well, not altogether bad for a 1st try.

I got a quite a bit further than on try 1.

Forgot to say in the last msg that I am running the game in a virtual desktop (1024x768) and last time I had the graphic settings on medium. This time, I had them on high (remembered that the one time I got further than the loading screen after setting up the char, I had everything on high).

With these settings I am getting past that cutscene and into the first "play scene" where I can accept the first quest. When I then start to look around it'll crash again. I did notice the sound breaking up before it crashes and I am noticing stripes on the screen so I will go on playing with those settings a bit.

Ok, I am playing....not altogether satisfactory but I am playing. I had to turn the music off which seemed to have been the reason for one of the crashes.

What is left is that the display of cut scenes seems to be a matter of luck and is totally inconsistent and I am seeing the effect of elongated and misshapen hands (trying the registry change described produced perfectly shaped hands but eyes and teeth became independent of their owners which made for a good laugh but did nothing for the game :) ). I am also seeing some of the lines described in other threads and the health bar is neither filling nor emptying but altogether the gog version of The Witcher is playable.

I'm playing now. Apart from the well-documented (google for witcher wine) issues of the vitality and toxicity bars and the enemy's health not showing up it runs OK. Once you can get it started without graphics glitches.

In general I have to start the game 6-10 times before I get a screen without graphics glitches. These consist of white bars going from the character's faces into infinity, or black bars, or transparant characters just showing eyes jaws and weapons.

These too have been documented and you'll find some registry settings for Wine3D you can change. I found these make absolutely no difference at all. Neither do rebooting, using nvidia-settings to reset the graphics card, switching to a windowed version instead of full-screen or changing any other parameter.

Sometimes I just have to try for 40 minutes starting and exiting the game until it comes up right. After that it stays stable during play. Until the next time you try to start. Maddening. Especially because there appears to be no pattern.

However, the game is quite good and I appear to be hooked on it. Playing chapter IV now.

I just installed the gog.com version and the installation works well. Note that the CrossTie defaults to the Steam installer, so you need to manually change the "Installer" to the one that you downloaded from gog.com, but otherwise you can stick with the defaults.

Kind regards,

Aaron
