GOG installer doesn't work...workaround for registering a dll?

So I've tried various ways of working around this, but I'm stumped: the GOG installer for Thief Gold seems to crash near the end with the following error:

Installation Failed:
C\Windows\system32\Ir50.32 dll
unable to register the dll/ocx:dll Registerserver failed code0x8000FFFF
Catastrophic Failure.

It seems to be an installation error centered around the GOG installer attempting to install the video codec needed to play the cinematic files. I've also seen native Windows users having problems with this as well so I know I'm not alone. Is there anything I can do to work around this issue?
