Game crashes when starting tutorial

The game crashes when I start a tutorial. I ran it in debug mode and it created a log file.

http://pastebin.com/bnCMuhDc

I am using Slackware Linux 13.37 and DDFix 1.5.11 for Thief Gold and Crossover Games 10.3. How can I fix this?

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=4099

.

I made a new bottle, reinstalled Thief and tried that. I got this log from it:

http://pastebin.com/qqJM295f

... bottle manager -> select bottle -> control panel -> launch winecfg -> libraries tab -> add winegstreamer -> edit and set to disable -> apply, ok -> try app again ...

.

Tried that, still got this log here: http://pastebin.com/i95SHvPU

Thank you for all your help. :)

... does ddfix_1.5.12 get any further? (1.5.12 is latest) ...

...what video card/drivers are you using?...

.

I'm using the binary nvidia drivers 173.14.31 for an NVIDIA 5200FX PCI card. I tried using 1.5.12 as you suggested, and ran into this log: http://pastebin.com/sB5akQt3

Another window opens up that says "Active Movie Window" or something like that. Is this related to the video codec issue other people have run into?

... yes, that's very likely ; I don't have this title, but it seems to
be using intel video 5x codecs, you could try installing the following
into the same bottle ;

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=8743

...I would also try enabling 'emulated virtual desktop' in the winecfg
utility (if you haven't already) -- also, it would be worth retrying
all of this in crossover-11 (using the trial version if needs be)...

.

Tried installing those, got this in the debug log:

http://pastebin.com/TfW0ZBUK

...that's odd - the log is from a failure of the intel video
codec installer, which I just checked here and it seems to
be working fine ; it could be you gt a bad download of the
installer...

..ahh... the gamersgate release just went on special for $2.50 ;
I'll grab it and have a closer look at things...

Update: I think the gamersgate version I could give a silver..
at least (after a bit of work getting it running) - ddfix 1.5.12
does work (sort of), but it's config file is fairly involved &
I haven't looked at all the permutations yet... still, all videos
and gameplay @ 1024x768 on my 1680x1050 widescreen was working OK.
Whether any of this holds true for the GOG release, I cannot say...

... Gamersgate release ; linux-2.6.39, nv9800gt/1024mb/nvidia 290.10
glob, cx11 ...

  • I'm not sure cxg-10.3 will work here - that is based on wine-1.3.9
    but I believe the crashing you're seeing wasn't fixed until wine-1.3.20
    or such ; cx11 is based on wine-1.4 and thus well beyond thar issue..

  • the gamersgate release required a win98 bottle to install - I chose the
    'full' install type. The installation bundle includes the intel codecs
    installer, who's GUI can get lost behind the Thief installer splashscreen,
    so one has to Alt-Tab a bit to bring it to the front so you can click on
    buttons to finish that part off ... the install should complete cleanly..

  • use winecfg, flip the bottle back to winxp after install...

  • you have to install Directx9 as mentioned previously

  • you have to provide a winelib override of winegstreamer=disable as mentioned previously..

  • install http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=8705 into same bottle

  • download ddfix_1.5.12 and extract the .zip archive to the game directory

  • rename the original Thief.exe to Thief.exe.bak ; download ddfix_thief1.zip, and extract 'thief.exe' to game directory

  • using a plaintext editor, open the file 'ddfix.ini' located in the game directory - edit
    the following sections of that file so they appear as below, saving the file once finished ;

;Anisotropic filtering for the first texture stage. Boolean.
AnisotropicFiltering=0

;Triple buffering. Boolean.
TripleBuffer=0

;Place some surfaces in system memory instead of video memory. 0, 1 or 2.
;0 = all surfaces in video memory.
;1 = menu in system memory. In case of any menu screen corruption.
;2 = menu and overlay in system memory. In case of any in-game UI corruption.
UseSysMemOverlay=2

;Turns on the 32 bit texture loader and some other things such as global fog
;autodetection. Boolean.
TextureReplacement=0

...that was enough to get it running here ; you could futz with other
options in the ddfix.ini file to see if any further improvements are
to be had ....
