GOG Version Doesn't Work - Resolved

I'm attempting to install the recently released GOG version of Total Annihilation under crossover games 9.0 for mac using OSX 10.6.4, and I'm having absolutely no luck with it. I've tried different bottle configurations (98, 2000, and XP) and installing directx legacy into a bottle, but still no luck. Does anybody with more technical experience know if this is simply incompatible or if there is more to the installation?

Hi,

Going by the tips&tricks on this page, this may be one of those GOG games
that needs to be launched from within the game's installdir (or that the
crossover created shortcut needs the --workdir flag added to the commandline)

Otherwise, if you grab a debuglog and upload it to a public repo like rapidshare
or the like and post the download URL back here, it might give a clue as to
what's going on....see;

Cheers!

Okay. I've uploaded a debug log to rapidshare. Hopefully it can provide some more information.

Hi,

Seems rapidshare is getting more and more picky about what filetypes
it will host -- can you please gzip that logfile and reupload it to
rapidshare again and give me the new download URL (the log you previously
hoisted for me gets downloaded as rapidshare html code, which typically
means it didn't like the file extension .cxlog )

Cheers!

Allright. I've reuploaded the file. Hopefully it's in a format rapidshare isn't finicky about.

Hi,

Much better....install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable into
the same bottle as TA. This package can be found in the 'Runtime Support
Components' area of the cxinstaller GUI.

Let me know how it works out....

Cheers!

Huzzah, it works. Thanks for the assistance. Could you add this to the tips and tricks page? I don't think I have the privileges, and I bet other users may wonder how to get the GOG version to work.

Excellent! I've updated the tips&tricks page accordingly ; you've been
accredited as confirming the information (I don't own this title 8).

That being so, would you mind posting back your Mac's machine specs
so folks know exactly what hardware you have this game working on?
Just the actual model, which video card you have..the basic essentials
as we say. That detail can sometimes help explain why it works on
one Mac and not another...ie; X1600 may behave different from a 9400M.

Cheers!

Not a problem. I'm running total annihilation using Crossover Games 9.0, using Mac OS X 10.6.4 with a windows XP bottle. My machine is a 15-inch unibody Macbook Pro with a 2.4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. I have two nVidia graphics cards: a GeoForce 9400M and a Geoforce 9600M GT. Finally, I have four gigabytes of Ram.

Confirmed working GoG version with the same tweaks on Arch Linux x64, AMD x2 4200+ 2GB RAM, Nvidia 8800GT (256.44), plain ALSA with Audigy 4.

<edit> Oh, CXG 9.1.0 installed system-wide! </edit>

hey Carl!,

Unless someone else wants to do the legwork, if you pop me back answers
to the questions "what's the filename of the gog installer?" and the output
of;

~/cxgames/bin/wine --bottle "bottlename" ~/.cxgames/"bottlename"/drive_c/windows/system32/uninstaller.exe --list

then it's a snap to put a c4p up that does the vcrun preinstall ..oh,
in Carl's case that would be;

/opt/cxgames/bin/wine --bottle "bottlename" ~/.cxgames/"bottlename"/drive_c/windows/system32/uninstaller.exe --list

Cheers!

[sheepeh@Pegasus bin]$ /opt/cxgames/bin/wine --bottle "TA" ~/.cxgames/"TA"/drive_c/windows/system32/uninstaller.exe --list

Kewl, 'your blood's worth bottling' as we aussies say... 8)

Do we want emulated virtual desktop on or not for a 'best case
result suits all' aspect?....or is everyone cool with it just
coming up in however it does without using any tricks?...

No biggy tho' I can pop that in or out as needed - thanks for
the data, I'll spool it all up read for when the Ninjas return
from their weekend of peace and quite ;)

Cheers!

What I've done so far is

Allow DirectX apps to stop the mouse leaving their window : ON
Allow the window manager to decorate the windows : OFF
Allow the window manager to control the windows : OFF
Emulate a virtual desktop : ON (1680 x 1050)

I've then set the internal game res to 1680 x 1050, which gives the perfect illusion of fullscreen. The reason I did this is because the starting movie and menus are all (I think) 640x480, or something just as low and setting the game resolution renders the game properly, but only the top left 640x480 of it. Setting the options described above let the game rull "fullscreen" properly, and simply shrinks the menu in to the top left while still letting the mouse roam wherever it needs to.

Hmmm....that mimics some similar behavior I've seen with some other
GOG titles...hence my question 8) Obviously one can't assume 1680x1050
...a lot of the time I've been heading for a 1024x768 default and
letting folks have at it from there....hmmm....sit on hands here and
let others respond...I'll go see if I can get some form of funky chicken
happening with another c4p I've got lurking about for stuff like this....

Hi,

I see Aric's enabled the c4p for this title - kudos to Carl/Chase/rampancy
for testing/contributing to that result!

If it needs any adjustments, let me know.

Cheers!
