Deus Ex Tips

Install With No Variable Speed/Audio Sync Issues Under CXG 10.x

Procedures tested under CrossOver Games (CXG) 10.x on Mac OS X 10.6 running on a quad-core Mac Pro.

  1. Create a new winvista bottle.
  2. Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 libs into the bottle: http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=7994
  3. Configure the bottle to create a virtual desktop at whatever size you like.  Don't run this game in full screen mode under CXG 10.x, or else the cursor will be stuck at the top of the screen.

Special note for OS X 10.7 Lion Users: You may encounter a crash of CXG when you enable the virtual desktop within the bottle.  If so, refer to this link for information on a workaround:
    http://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/mac/faq/liondesktopcrash

  4. Install Deus Ex.
  5. Update to version 1.112fm (GOTY and Steam verions may already be at this version? Check before trying to update.)  http://deusex2.filefront.com/file/Deus_Ex_Multi_Player_Patch;10604#Download
  6. Visit this site, which has a rebuilt version of the Dues Ex launcher to address the variable speed issue (and by extension, the audio cutting short issue): http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/#downloads.  Download and expand the zip file for the launcher; then copy the expanded files to the Deus Ex\System folder.
  7. Quit CXG, open Terminal.  Execute the following command exactly as-is to enable a hidden preference that allows games running in window mode the ability to adjust monitor brightness/contrast:

    defaults write com.codeweavers.CrossOverGames AllowGamma always

  8. Launch the game, adjust display size to whatever you like, set 32-bit graphics and try adjusting brightness/contrast.  It should now work.  You will notice, while running the game in window mode, as you adjust brightness/contrast, the entire monitor will update according to what you set.  But this is okay, because whenever you quit the game or switch out of the game to another app, the monitor's original configuration will be restored.
  9. Start a new game.  You shouldn't encounter any problems with audio synchronization or variable game speed.  If for some reason you do, the same site http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/#downloads has some additional info on settings you can adjust within the new launcher to try and resolve this.  (I personally didn't have to adjust any such settings during testing.)
  10. Optionally (and I highly recommend) review the second page of the same site for good info on installing an updated texture pack called "New Vision" and updating various settings in DeusEx.ini to maximize anti-aliasing and other texture rendering settings to make the game look a lot better.

Only side-effect observed during testing is the color is a bit off under Mac OS X 10.6.  Dialog menus appear to be a shade of purple rather than blue.  I speculate this is because of the gamma value of 2.2 being used instead of 1.8.  It's possible to create a color profile for your monitor based on a gamma of 1.8 if this is important to you: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3712.
