Using DirectX 9 installed in the same bottle as the game allows the game to work well using either the built-in DirectX renderer or the enhanced DirectX 9 renderer available here: http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/
For some reason the built-in OpenGL renderer and the enhanced OpenGL renderer available on that same website don't work very well (only the default video settings at 640x480 seem to work).
