Who gets Civ IV to work?

I haven't been able to get Civilization IV to work for a long time now. I've tried both the GOG and Steam versions. Usually, the game crashes on launch. Sometimes the game has worked for a number of turns, but crashes when I get to 2000 BC or so. The GOG installer also gives an error message before installation finishes.

Using Debian now, and nVidia graphics.
