Warcraft WOW on Ubuntu 17.10

HI all,
Newish user to Linux and new to crossover, decided to twitch for education reasons.

Trying to run wow, seen many posts on the forums but is any one succesfully running this as there seems to be mixed results on the forums?

Works fine. I have a generic Wine guide on all the bnet games here : https://schotty.com/Wine/Wine_Plus_Blizzard_App/

I do have a Crossover bottle based off this i made a while back, when it was impossible to get a perfectly running version of everything in one bottle/prefix from Crossover, Lutris, or PlayOnLinux. If the WoW crosstie fails to work right, fixing it is generally because you need a 64bit bottle/prefix, Win10 winver, and depending on title (Diablo, Hearthstone if memory serves right) a per app downgrade to Win32 (guide states which ones).

Hth.

Hi Lee

there is a crossover just for WOW and it runs more or less out of the gate
https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/crossover/tips/world-of-warcraft/special-world-of-warcraft-build-for-crossover-17

you need to change your windows under wine configure to windows 10 and if your looking to just run WOW you can bypass the launcher using the run command not a true fix but it will get you in-game

open the run command thats in your WOW bottle and hit browse

now in Program Files/World of Warcraft OR Program Files(86)/World of Warcraft
pick the WOW.exe OR WOW-64.exe then hit open

at this point you can just run it but I would recommend hitting the Create Launcher that will make a shortcut in the bottle

@Schotty:

Seems I can't get it right. Running Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.03(?) 64bit. I installed PlayOnLinux and Winetricks. I copied my WoW installation over from my Windows drive, so I know it works there.

Problems:
Can't install Wininet. Always gives me an error the checksum is incorrect. Plus, the download is very small, less than 2kb.
Can't install vcrun2015. It's just not found. I installed VC 2017 instead. Not sure if that even works.

Starting the Bnet Launcher is already producing massive crashes in the Bnet Helper, the login button never appears. I can enter the Bnet application, by bypassing the login process, and it actually found my installation of WoW, but when I try to start it, it crashes immediately. No error message really, just my screen gets unresponsive and I have to enter another virtual terminal to kill the process WoW-64.exe.

So... is there any hope here? 3D works, I can play TheDarkMod, Star Wars: The Old Republic through Wine and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided through Steam (even though that works not nearly as smooth as under Windows). I appreciate any help or advise you can give.

Sorry to hear this.

So, to get things straight, I am going to ask a barrage of questions -- its merely to figure out what was done and what we can try moving forward.

  1. Is this in Crossover's latest release?
  2. Have you tried running the game from a command line or running CX to log the output so perhaps we can see if there is any output to point us in the right direction?
  3. Have you tried other methods of using Wine from scratch (not copying over)? Such as vanilla wine, lutris, or play-on-linux? I used to, key words there, maintain the PoL Bnet script until the community ruined it along with my WoW and D3 scripts. Between trying to keep up with the janky method that PoL uses to get things working (good reasons why PoL is verboten on the wine fcrums and appdb), the people kept modding it to do things that are package/system level not wine. Been a bit since I used the Lutris script, but it did work at least last August or so when I started over when CX had a broken period due to the Auth changes. It worked and then, and my guide should be still good. Been a few months since I played, so an update may have broken something. I will test it when I get home and can try updating and logging into wow and d3. But last update to my guide page, everything was indeed tested from a fresh prefix aside from WC3 and Destiny2.

My current play method to stay abreast on is using the cli & lutris to manipulate wine-staging (makes testing dxvk stuff very easy, and eagerly awaiting inclusion in CX). If it don't work for me there somehow, its generally broken badly and something to walk away from for a bit (at least with MMOs) :D

Hi, Schotty!

Thank you very much for your extensive reply. I really appreciate it.

Ok, first things first.

  1. I'm currently looks around and hushs not using CrossOver. I do have a license for macOS. But I never tried it on Linux. This is actually my fourth day on Linux Mint, so I'm still on my training wheels here. I'm running this on Wine 3.5 and I would rather use it purely than relying on PlayOnLinux, but it seemed like a good start, that's why I tried it.
  2. I used both CLI (your method using winetricks) and PoL. Same results with Wininet and vcrun2015.
  3. Don't know of lutris, but if you think that could work, I'll give it a try.

Thanks a lot for your help!

PS: Oh yeah, wine 3.5 is set to Windows 10.
PPS: Funny... I installed vcrun2005, vcrun2013 (instead of 2015) and corefonts through winetricks (again!), then started Bnet Launcher through wine directly and - lo and behold, I could log in to Bnet! Starting WoW still resulted in a crash, but I'm one step further. Still no luck getting wininet to install.

Which winetricks commands failed and are you using the staging version of wine (you need to use the following repo if outside of Lutris/PoL https://wine-staging.com/installation.html)? Lets make sure you are not seeing issues up until the BNet install (none here):

The main problem lies therein, that winetricks is using a completely different download link for wininet. vcrun15 and win10 are not even found.

Thanks again for your assistance!

PS: Sorry, I'm German and I'm using a german version of Linux Mint. Maybe that's why it's not working.
PPS: Just started WoW through wine again, even though vcrun2015 and wininet are missing and it worked! I'm in business! 😀
PPPS: The mouse works very weird in WoW. It seems to lag behind the mouse icon, and you have to wait for it to catch up. 😕
PPPPS: Oooookay.... started WoW the next day, and the mouse is working correct... weird, eh?

Glad you got it working.

As for your German setup, shouldnt be an issue for either wine or myself. Ich bin nicht so gut mit mein deutsche, aber ich habe im hochschule vier jahren deutsche klassen (you can tell me how horrid that was, I am not going to ask a translator lol),

Anyway feel free to hit me up whenever.

I am on Vanilla and TBC wow often, occasionally retail. Do enjoy Diablo 3, and Path Of Exile. But with Shroud of the Avatar dropping I have found myself in there quite a bit lately.

Thank you, Schotty.

Your German is actually not that bad. I think you would get along fine in Germany. :) As everywhere else, local citizens appreciate if you at least try to speak their language. And your efforts seem to be much more than just trying.

Yes, too many games and not enough free time. ;)

Again, thank you and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Thank you! I appreciate the criticism. Its been literally a 2 decades since HS, and I am sure it shows, but thanks to the net, I can at least try here and there to keep from getting TOO atrocious.

Glad things are working, and you, too, have a great weekend (or whats left of it). Just got done with my taxes. So thats a victory in itself :D
