CodeWeavers communication was excellent. When I had questions or a bug report, they answered very quickly via phone and email. Best of all, they can fix bugs. They have a very strong and talented development team.
An Out-of-the-Box Mac Port
In October 2013, Japanese developer Austin Osueke got the green-light for his Windows game, Vanguard Princess. A key selling point to voters was eigoMANGA’s (the publisher) commitment to porting Vanguard Princess to Mac and Linux.
Familiar with porting tools like Wine and Cider, Austin was confident that he could bring the game to Mac and Linux on his own. But Wine development turned out to be a lot harder than he originally thought. Not wanting to disappoint those who had voted Vanguard Princess into Steam in the first place, Austin sought another solution.
Shortly thereafter, Austin discovered CrossOver through CodeWeavers' website and tested Vanguard Princess with CrossOver Mac. Not only was he thrilled to see that Vanguard Princess worked great with CrossOver Mac out of the box, he was even more impressed that the Mac gaming community was already buying CrossOver to run Vanguard Princess, and chattering about it on YouTube and Twitter.
In March 2015, Austin decided to stop by the CodeWeavers booth at the Game Developers Conference (GDC). Later he met up with James Ramey, the president of CodeWeavers, at E3. The partnership began shortly after that.
“Throughout the remainder of the year, the team sent me demos of Vanguard Princess on Mac OS. We were all so impressed, because CodeWeavers did custom software development of the game on Mac OS and they've been working with Valve to make sure that the game integrates with SteamOS. CodeWeavers was really committed to Vanguard Princess succeeding on these platforms, and they were doing development work at a level we couldn't possibly have done on our own.”
Osueke remarked, “CodeWeavers communication was excellent. When I had questions or a bug report, they answered very quickly via phone and email. Best of all, they can fix bugs. They have a very strong and talented development team.”
In March 2016, CodeWeavers showcased the Mac port of Vanguard Princess at GDC in San Francisco. The game looks and performs better on Macs than it does on PCs. People were playing the game, and then coming back to the booth with their colleagues to play. Many were surprised to hear that it was originally a PC game.
According to Osueke, “Meeting the team and showcasing the game at GDC was just a great experience.”
In March 2015 the game was released for Mac OS X on Steam and it's been well received by gamers. “We're all eagerly anticipating the Linux release,” Osueke said. “Getting Vanguard Princess ported through CodeWeavers has been an excellent return on investment!”
