Crossover Games Mac 7.2.0 and CoX..

(Copied from my post in the CoX forum)

... it's dead, Jim.

I was afraid of this... I tried out a preview version of CXGames from one of the Steam threads (TF2, I think?) and it.. does not launch City of Heroes. The application locks up at the EULA window, without actually displaying the EULA.. White box up top, UI fails to respond.

Actually killing Crossover is remarkably difficult at this point, requiring one to go nuke, by hand, something in the vicinity of 10 wine-related threads via Activity Monitor.

Oops.

The release of CX Games 7.2.0 has this same behavior.

Reverting to 7.1.1 for now.

Early 2006 iMac, Mac OS X 10.4.11, 2 gigs system ram, ATI w/128 megs ram.

Hi,

Full disclosure... Something went wrong with City of Heroes in 7.2.0.

Originally we tried to support this game. I implemented some bugfixes, but then realized that the main pain was coming from missing driver features(opengl PBuffers on Macs and non-nvidia cards on Linux) and driver bugs(Macs), and we couldn't work around them because the game uses OpenGL and talks directly to the driver(usually a plus, but not in this case). So we decided not to support CoH officially. The improvements included the mouse pointer and some other minor glitches, but none of the big crashes.

Still, I hoped to have it supported inofficially. Which means, it is supposed to work, but if you ran into driver bugs bad luck. So we mentioned COH improvements in the 7.2-beta1 release notes.

During beta testing we realized the license agreement bug. Jacek looked into it and concluded that it was caused by the new version of the Mozilla Gecko HTML engine. The bug seemed to be in Gecko itself, not our code, and we couldn't fix it in time. So the game is known not to work in 7.2.0.

However, Andrew just collected all the release notes from 7.2-beta1 to 7.2-rc5, so the COH improvements made it into the final announcement, and I didn't catch it.

We're sorry for the confusion, and even more sorry that CoH is broken in 7.2.0. I recommend to use the unsupported release which we released between 7.1 and 7.2(its main point was to run Spore). It has most of the fixes, and Spore should work. Beyond that I hope that the next Gecko update fixes the bug and the game works again in newer CrossOver versions.

It's cool. Life on the bleeding edge and all that. I seem to recall having Significant Problems(tm) with the Spore build last time I tried it, but I'll give it another whirl later. For now? All of my current needs are met by the previous official release.

The outstanding issues that -I- experience are all QOL items. The crashing/lockups are fully preventable, with the proper planning.. I've got mostly functional graphics.. I'm missing things like bloom and depth of field, but those are hardly necessary to see the game "as intended". We nailed down shaders and whatnot to my satisfaction some time ago...

Really, the cursor glitch hasn't been an issue since I started using compatible cursors, so things that actually impact me and how I play? Are the remaining keyboard bug, and the mouse issues that I seem to be the only one reporting. :D
