Graphics card support?

I'm looking to get either upgrades or a new machine soon. I've always really wanted gaming through wine or crossovers to work, but I've had terrible luck in the past. The graphics cards I've gotten before were poorly supported in linux itself and were terrible when used with wine or crossovers. What graphics cards have the best functionality and support in crossovers for linux games? Also, how about laptop graphics cards? The last time I looked into this, it was pretty much required to have a mainstream Nvidia-based desktop in order to get games to function well. Is that still the case, or are the ATI open source drivers actually getting solid? Thanks.

Hi,

The ATI 'open source' drivers are like the Nvidia open source drivers -- for games, they don't
work and you have to install the proprietary drivers from either vendor to get things working.

The proprietary ATI drivers have improved in recent times, but IMHO you're going to have a better
experience with the Nvidia product line. As for laptop graphics chipsets (M for mobility), these can
be problematic beasts even for windows users....I've even seen a number of posts over on wineHQ
where users have resorted to pcmcia video cards and external monitors to get the performance they
need from laptops -- the machines themselves have ample processing power, but the graphics chipsets
and/or drivers let them down in non-windows environments.

Hope this helps...

Cheers!
