gray/black flickering in EVE online
Anonymous

Hi I am having some graphics issues in Eve Online with Crossover Games. I am getting gray and black flickering when I leave spacedock, it doesn't happen when I am docked, and doesn't affect the menus, its just when I'm traveling through space that the flickering happens. I am running it on a laptop with a 2ghz pentium dual-core, 4gb of ram, and a 512mb ATI Radeon HD4330. I have Ubuntu 9.04 installed, and I have the ATI FGLRX drivers enabled. To try and correct the issue, I downloaded and installed the ATI Catalyst drivers for Ubuntu, and I have been messing around with the graphics options in Catalyst and the Eve client. Catalyst definitely made the game look better, but the flickering is still there. I have no idea how to get rid of it. Any help would be appreciated!

Also when I look at other player's ships, they are invisible. The white targeting boxes and names show up, but all I can see are their ship's lights and exhaust trails. The turrets on my own ship are also invisible. The flickering issue still persists, I have changed the period interval settings in the game to "interval 1" which forces it to wait for vsync, and in ATI Catalyst I have "wait for vertical refresh" set to always on. It doesn't seem to have helped all that much.

I also have steam and counter-strike source installed, and both work fine, with the exception of a a scrollbar issue in steam, and a little lag in counter-strike. I haven't seen any flickering in my other games, so I don't think its a driver issue anymore, though I could be wrong.

I read in your compatibility center that EVE is currently rated silver, and supported. Do you have any idea when it will be upgraded to gold? Say, within a year? Sorry to ask so many questions. Thanks for your time.

What version of the Catalyst and fglrx drivers have you been using?

This could be a part of a bug related to specific ATI chipsets and their drivers, but I'd wait for one of our games devs to confirm/deny that.

Have you tried enabling/disabling HDR as per the tip in Eve Online's Tips & Tricks page?

The FLGRX drivers I enabled through "system/administration/hardware drivers" and were supplied by Ubuntu, I don't know what version they are.

The Catalyst driver I downloaded from ATI's website, I think it's their newest version. The installer is called "ati-driver-installer-9-10-x86.x86_64.run" It unloaded 6 .deb files which I was able to install drivers from, and they made the Catalyst Control Center show up under the Applications menu.

Catalyst correctly shows my model ATI card, which is a Radeon HD 4330. When I look under the graphics menu in the EVE client for some reason it thinks I am using a Radeon 9500, it might be because of the FLGRX drivers. I have tried removing the FLGRX drivers and installing Catalyst only, but EVE won't run when I do that, it will only run if the FLGRX drivers are enabled. However I have just been relying on the driver's auto-installers to do their thing by themselves, I saw a guide online on how to manually install them that goes a lot more in depth:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

That shows how to remove the flgrx drivers from the kernel and then manually install the new Catalyst drivers so that they show up under "system/administration/hardware drivers" however I'm kind of scared to do that just yet because I don't want to have to re-install Ubuntu again if I screw up (I'm already on my fourth install in the last couple weeks)

I also saw another possible fix here:

http://tan-com.com/posts/technology/fix-ubuntu-904-ati-driver-issue

I will post back if it changes anything.
