Extremely slow UT99 multiplayer in a Mac

Hi People,

I've just been trying Crossover Games 8.0 in a Mac and I could get Unreal Tournament 99 to run almost perfectly. Actually, I had to use CoolBok to control speedstep t avoid the game being really speedy. But in general it was all ok. However, when playing on line I can connect to the servers and my ping was above 500 ms. Sometimes it was above 1000 ms (whereas in a Windows machine it is around 20-40 ms) making it impossible to play. Is there a way to improve this situation?

Thanks a lot,
Daniel.

CEDEGA games, you say? 😅

The only thing I can suggest is if you're slowing your Mac down to make it not speedy, try speeding it UP. All that matters is that the speed doesn't change from the moment UT launches to the moment it shuts down - so lock it high rather than low.

The same happens on Windows and Linux, too.

Well, sorry, I meant Corssover Games. I already fixed it.

The problem is that I can't speed it up and keep the speed stable. It keeps going down and up because of speedstep and this makes UT99 extremely fast. But speeding it down doesn't affect the game. It runs great even at the sloest speed. Only multiplayer that is faulty, but it is falty in slow or hi speed. =P

Now, I only have to get multplayer working to decide to buy it.

Heh, I'm just kidding with you.

Can you not temporarily turn SpeedStep off, or turn on a Performance setting somewhere? I don't own a Mac, but as I say it happens on Linux and the native Windows too - it's just because the game's old, it reads the CPU speed at the start and any change throws it out of whack. Trying to play online like that will cause the server and your client to fall out of sync, and mess up in funny ways, usually involving stuttering.

You could try editing your menu shortcut to say 'UnrealTournament.exe -cpuspeed xxx' where xxx is the speed in mhz on your processor at top speed. Assuming you have the latest patch installed, this should result in a normal speed game.

Hi, thank you very much for your response. But are you sure that Unreal Tournamente 99 understand this option? Also, how can I edit a game link in corssover to include this option?

Thanks,
Daniel Bittar.

I've used it on my copy of Unreal Tournament : Game of the Year Edition and it worked, yes.

Unfortunately, I've never used MacOS, so I haven't the foggiest idea how to change your shortcuts. If you can't work out how to do that, what you can try is an alternative method - load up the game, and from the ingame menu across the top choose Tools > System Console.

In the console, type

CPUSPEED=xxxx

replacing xxxx for the speed (in Mhz) of your processor. For instance, if your processor was 2.2Ghz, you'd type

CPUSPEED=2200

Let me know how you get on.
