YES, gamepad is working perfectly on mac os x...

hello all,

as most of you know i have been trying to get my gamepad [which is a madkatz gamepad pro] to work with my games, all of them.
as most of you do also know, getting them to work in crossover has been some-what tiresome, and feel like you get somewhere, and then it does not work.

but one program i have now come across has now opened my eyes even more. no it is not gamepad companion [tried it, was good but had major flaws], also usb overdrive [better than gamepad companion but was worse on the right analog stick.

the answer is "ControllerMate"

i myself am a Max/MSP/Jitter user. if you know it, it is a graphical programming suite. amazing and geeky all at the same time. you can make programs and pretty much anything your mind has to offer and your obvious knowledge of what the program objects do is a major help. so this program "ControllerMate", is right up my alley, as it pretty much has the same implications that Max 5 does, as in you can edit things around.
I could in all essence make a program myself to do communication etc, it would make my brain bigger and all that, but there would be a lot of maxing to do way before i could even play a game.

but this little cookie saves the big learning curve of max 5 and helps you dearly in getting your controller to work in any game.
i now can play half life 2 and far cry with my gamepad with no trouble, and a minor application build in the software, which would literally take 10 minutes to make. plus you can make multiple builds of controller layouts so you can switch with different games or applications without having to delete or edit what you created before.

and the best thing, is that this program only cost $15. that is a hind sight cheaper than gamepad companion and usboverdrive. obviously not by a lot, but this means you can "properly" edit every feature of your gamepad. which is really what i wanted. and with the other programs, you can not at all.

this is not a sales pitch, but more just to say to everyone that this is worth the money and i do advise you to get it if you really want to use your gamepad in the best way that suits you. yes it may be an extra $15 to spend, but it is worth it.

days awake, here i come :)...

Good work Lewis -- diligence is often rewarded! I've mentioned
an extension to a 'crosoover tools' type page that one of our
highly revered ninjas was talking about, so perhaps soon we can
collate all this input layer stuff into one central location ;)

aye, it is great this program. plus it fits with what i do in max 5. which entails connecting boxes to make links. but less math though :)

i am glad i waited and tried this before i bought it, much like the other 2. they were ok, but i was always looking for something that you could edit ALL of the HID signals. i could have done it in max, but it would have been a much longer process.

the good thing about this program, is as i said you can edit ALL of the HID signal. which means you can make your d-pad control have 8 different options, since you have the top-left, bottom-right etc options.

i really do recommend this program to anyone who has a mac and who really does need to have full control over how your gamepad will work. plus the manual is really helpful and helps on how to make your mouse go to your right analog stick, and unlike the other 2 options [gamepad companion and usboverdrive], this one does not have any jitter in the movement at all, it is just like you are using your mouse. very fluid.

and for $15, it was something i had to get...

It certainly sounds like the ticket for Mac users...btw...you =did= mention your
Mac model & OSX version didn't you? ...ie; like, we'd hope it'll work in all
Mac cases, and MACOSX releases...but, as is always best, assume nothing and
spell things out nice and clearly like...(to avoid disappointment)

In the linux world, more math is involved ;) Firstly, I can actually drive - fact is
I've been driving for coming up on 40years now, and this includes drag/circuit/rally
driving with cars and bikes, driving trucks, buses and semi-trailers and although my
license is now expired, fixed-wing aircraft were also on my list of things to do whilst bored...

Driving simulators I'm slightly nutso about -- I think it's because I know oh-so-well that
'seat of the pants' feeling that a car =should= give you, in empathy with control/steering
inputs and what the terrain you're traveling over has to offer (grip wise). A lot of driving
simulators come-up well short...imho. A lot depends on the game itself....

I've never had much time for gamepads, but here with crossover/wine/linux and FlatOut running,
things are immeasurable fun....really. I must've spent the better part of six hours today refining
my gamepad skills =just= for this title....(these skills directly apply to Rollcage Stage 2 also),
and everything's working just wonderfully. There is probably a whole heap of games that work just
as well/nicely with the USB gamepad HID....but there are those games that will not....

TOCA3 is one such title -- you need analog/progressive brake&throttle, steering of course, and
I'd go with button clutch and steering-wheel gearshifts....but the GT-4 steeringwheel setup is
a long way from this. 'More math is involved'...I think some model specific codes need be part
of the linux usbhid driver...I'll have to printk this lot out later to dig it out...

But...yes...gamepaddability is a hapenin' thang

PS: I paid AUD$20 for the logitech gamepad

I've been using Controllermate for almost a year now and I must say it's an amazing program and I'm glad to see other people connecting it with Crossover. 😀

The combination of Controllermate and CXG has made it possible to play many games such as Counter-Strike and MAME emulators.

One major problem that still lurks is the inability for the analog controls. Some games like Aquarius and N64 emulators (sixtyforce is old and not so compatible) require an actual analog joystick to fully enjoy. And from that, it is inevitable that we must still wait for full gamepad support on Macs. ☹️

-- EDIT --

Aw, I apologize. I spoke too soon and didn't discover that DirectInputs for Mac controllers are now working. 😀
