I have to keep restarting D3 until it eventually gets past this part, but it's basically a pain in the ass. Any way to fix this or make it more reliable?

That is a known issue which has a workaround explained here:

I had already tried that and it didn't work. I just installed it through PlayOnLinux and everything worked perfectly.
