Understanding window types?

Despite I have settings to allow my WM to decorate and control my windows, some windows are still controlled and decorated by Wine. Mysterious side effect here is that Gnome3/Gnome Shell has assorted glitches associated with those windows: I cannot drag them across workspaces (though I can do that when window/app selector is active), their raise/lower behavior may be weird etc etc. Even more strange, child windows in Outlook (send/receive progress, etc) have wm decorations in Gnome2, but do not have in Gnome3. Could anyone please explain the difference between window types and handling it in different Gnome versions?
