Kindle for PC.

I came across an item in TeleRead that mentioned an article http://lifehacker.com/5406505/run-kindle-for-pc-in-linux-with-wine for getting Kindle PC running under wine. It mentioned that Text was not displayed and one had to go change
the wine configuration to Win98. Now I get a very similar problem when I try and install Serif's PagePlus 11 which I have always tried in a winxp bottle. Having read the Kindle PC fix, I thought ah ha, maybe I should try a win98 bottle - but unfortunately it would not even install. Any ideas on what a change of config to win98 in wine would fix that effects displaying text. Its so frustrating that PagePlus looks like it is so close to working.

Hi,

You'd have to be sure it was the same issue at play -- I know some apps/games
that require one or another (or more than one) version of visual c++ installed
into the same bottle, before the fonts/GUI would work correctly....I'm just being
cautious in mentioning this, as it may be the win98 bottle profile has nothing
to do with what you're experiencing with PagePlus...

Relative to what you want to try here however, => install the app into a bottle
using the winxp profile => use winecfg to change the bottle profile to win98 after
installation has completed => try running the app...it will run (or not) in win98
guise.

You might want to try installing the corefonts support package as well.

Most of the docs for these operations above are here....see;

Hope this helps...

Cheers!

Hi Don you lost me on that one. I thought winecfg would only apply to wine and not crossover - No?.

I will try adding some fonts and see if that fixes anything

Howdy,

In your original posting here, you mentioned (quote)

"and one had to go change the wine configuration to Win98."

I've had a look at the link you referenced - they're talking about winecfg.
Crossover is based on wine -- it shares many common components that mainstream
Wine has, and this includes winecfg. Pretty much nearly everything that you
can or would do with wine, you can do in crossover's wine environment as well,
and more. In the end, it's going to be crossover's wine component, that's going
to be responsible for getting the application to work. This is to say, just as
you would configure wine with winecfg, you also configure crossover's wine engine
with it's own custom version of winecfg in just the same way.

On the following page, you can see the crossover 'Control Panel' way of accessing
winecfg -- you can see an entry 'winecfg' which changes the properties and runtime
options on the bottle being used.

Hope this clarifies things for you.

Cheers!

Hi Don

Yes that clarifies things a lot, much clearer now thanks.

But the bad news was I used winecfg to change to Windows 98 and it made things worse the icons did not even show properly. Setting it back to Windows XP fixed the icons but still some text does not display. It has core fonts
installed and when I try and type some text which it reports as being Times New Roman ( That bit of text works)
nothing displays. So suspect a font problem but not sure which. I tried installing Truetype Font for Times, but believe that was already installed and did not make any difference.

Any other ideas?

Hi,

You might try installing one (or all) of the visual c++ redistributable
dependencies, and/or msxml3 -- these would be things I'd try.

Cheers!

Don you got me again - How would I go about that? where do I find the Visual c++ and msxml3 etc?

Thanks Keith

Hi,

Using the cxinstallwizard, tick the 'show all service packs and dependencies' box ;
the packages I refer to will appear in the list of targets...

Cheers!

Thanks - learning more all the time, but still no joy with displaying some of the text in PagePlus 11

....having a look at the WineHQ Appdb for this program ;

That report is of an older wine version, but does it sound like the
issue you're seeing? If yes (and I'll presume this to be more or less
so), I can probably speculate the following -- if that above report is
accurate, then back at wine-0.9.39 you needed to install IE (internet
explorer) to get PP-11 to run at all. Sadly, the reporter didn't tell
us which IE was used....however...the reason we seemingly don't need
to do that in Crossover, is because of the inbuilt 'crossover html engine'
(in the mainstream wine versions, this component is like wine's gecko). This
said, it'd still be worth installing IE6 into the same bottle, and see if
that changes anything...(although a gut feeling tells me it's probably
going to want IE7 if it wants IE at all, but the current IE7 support is
a bit questionable, so I would try IE6 first)...

Now...regarding all this lot, I've been chasing the wine-devel releases
from 1.1.26 through to current 1.1.33 and at around the 1.1.31 version,
I've noted a lot of improvements with respect to font rendering, mshtml
handling (gecko) and better IE7 support...so perhaps some of these
improvements have helped PP-11 along the way - the only real way to check
is to try it yourself really ; I can't seem to find a demo of PP-11 for
download...do you happen to know if/where a demo of PP-11 exists? (if I
had a demo of it, I could look closer at what it's trying to do ;)

Btw, this discussion should probably end here, and be moved over to your
thread on the PagePlus 11 C4 entry forum;

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=508;forum=1;msg=65399

Give the idea about IE6 above a go, and post back to the above thread, not
here. That way, we can keep info related to PP-11 all in one place for
people to find.....ie; it's not exactly intuitive for people interested
in PP-11 to look in -this- forum under a thread about 'Kindle for PC' to
find out about our discussion here so far about what we've tried with PP-11...<grin>

I'll link this back into the proper thread in a moment...

Cheers!

Not PP-11 but an earlier release that has the same problem see http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/PagePlus/default.asp

Thanks for your interest
