files become property of root

I'm quite excited about Crossover Office, but I'm experiencing this problem using Excel on Novell's Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10.1 SP2.
When I save a file, I'm told that I have to close it, then reopen it, but it re-opens as read only. The permissions indicate that it's now owned by root though I'm logged in and opening the files as a regular user. The file wasn't owned by root before.
Did I make a mistake in the installation of either Crossover Office or MS Office 2003?
Thanks,
-TM
