just installed crossover-games-demo_7.2.2-1_i386.deb

and I can't find it anywhere under applications.
not in settings? or system or anywhere

so how do I bring it up?
I'm using mythbuntu

Which window-manager is mythbuntu using these days?

under settings it has xfce4 settings manager?
I have no idea if that's the window-manager sorry

Right...I had a hunch this was the case. The window
manager you're using (XFCE4) does not yet have a fully
working XDG implementation, which is what crossover
relies on to create the menu entries.

This means, you will have to use the menu editor of
XFCE to manually create menu items for the crossover
installation. The files (executables) you want to
create menu entries for are in ;

/home/<your_username>/cxgames/bin/

Make menu entries for cxinstallwizard, cxsetup at
least.

Note that when you do install software using the cxinstallwizard,
it won't create menu entries for the installed windows stuff
either, however in 95% of cases, you will end up with a desktop
icon instead which you can launch from (if after the install process
finishes and you don't see any new icons, hit the F5 key to update
the desktop)

This is an issue with XFCE, not with crossover -- the XFCE devs will
finish off the XDG stuff in a future XFCE release. If you have any
hassles just post to this thread ; I'm an old hand at XFCE (-B

even though I have installed the crossover-games-demo_7.2.2-1_i386.deb
and reinstalled it, there is no directory called cxgames under my /home/<your_username>/

Are you installing into /opt instead?

yes it has, I'm a newb to linux, what's the difference?

anyway, I'm not seeing how to enter cxinstallwizard and the others into the menu?

If you install into /opt, the crossover stuff is available to
all user accounts -- if you only install into your home dir,
it's only available to that one user account.

For the other, Settings -> Menu Editor

A /opt install is okay, but of course the executables will
be in /opt/cxgames/bin instead,

Settings -> Menu Editor
there is no menu editor under settings?

Sorry...you must have xfce 4.4 or better...

Applications -> Settings -> Menu Editor

yeah I said, there is no menu editor, under settings

You don't have this?

http://www.xfce.org/documentation/4.2/manuals/xfce-mcs-manager#manager-dialog

In 4.4 this moved to Applications->Settings->Menu Editor

You can always open a shell (or use the run command function) and run the following command;

xfce4-menueditor

As a side note, I'm sort of curious why you're running mythbuntu,
not that it matters (I would personally run ubuntu and add mythtv to it)

well I'm trying to set up a wireless home entertainment system.
I figured mythbuntu was a good start while I figure out the hardware side of things.
anyway I ran xfce4-menueditor under terminal and it just came up with "command not found"

Indeed....okay then, I'm not terribly familiar with mythbuntu ;
I did have a cursory look at it a few months back, and recalled
they were using xfce as the window-manager, but I'm not entirely
sure it would make a good, general purpose linux desktop system,
just because it's specifically aimed at being a mythtv appliance,
not a general purpose desktop.

Because it is what it is, it's entirely likely they didn't bother
including the menu editor...ie; do you need a menu editor on a
mythtv box?....no, not at all really...so this is probably where
the wheels are falling off.

If it has a package-manager, check in that -- the xfce menu editor
component might not be installed. You could right-click, create new
launcher as an alternative, but that will create a desktop icon to
launch stuff with, not add to the menu. You could also add a launcher
to panel 1 as another alternative to do the same thing - obviously
there's a few options here to achieve the same ends, but somehow I
think my best advice is to question the sanity of trying to use a
linux distro as a desktop system, when it's primary purpose of design
was to behave like a mythtv powered linux appliance. Does that make
any sense to you? (;

You might have a better time of it, by installing any one of the
other dedicated ubuntu desktop systems, instead of mythbuntu which
isn't dedicated to the desktop situation as such.

ooooooooooook?
so are you saying I should install unbuntu for my pc and mythbuntu on my mythbox when I get it?

In a nutshell, yes, although I don't like telling people
which linux distro to use, I just feel you'll have a better
time of it using a dedicated desktop system for your desktop,
and using mythbuntu for a mythtv based HTPC/server.

From the mythbuntu website ;

Mythbuntu is an community supported add-on for Ubuntu focused upon setting up a
standalone MythTV based PVR system. It can be used to prepare a standalone system
or for integration with an existing MythTV network.

And also ;

Mythbuntu uses the XFCE4 desktop. All unnecessary standard Ubuntu applications such
as OpenOffice, Evolution, and a full Gnome desktop are not installed for a Mythbuntu.
If at any time a user wants to, they can install ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, or
xubuntu-desktop and add a full desktop onto their installation. This is done via the
Mythbuntu Control Centre.

So...it seems you can use it as a desktop system, but it's not it's primary intent.
