Crossover on the Aspire One Netbook (Linpus) HOWTO

For anyone who's interested...

How to install CX Standard on the Acer Aspire One Netbook with Linpus.

  1. Download the Crossover Office Installing (shell based, NOT RPM) using your Acer's browser.
  2. Select the My Files icon from "Files" menu on the desktop.
  3. Click on File, and choose Terminal. this opens a desktop terminal.
  4. Type xfce-setting-show and press enter to bring up the settings window.
  5. Select Desktop, and then choose the Behavior Tab.
  6. Tick the box that says "Show desktop menu on right click" and save/close the window.
  7. While in that terminal, go to your home downloads directory using cd /home/user/Downloads (press enter)
  8. Execute the Crossover Install by typing sh install-crossover-xxxxx (depending on your version, or just type install- and press TAB to autocomplete the line) Press enter.
  9. Crossover begins the install (NOTE: you may see gibberish on the installer window. Just always click the right-most button for Next/Continue. Once CX is installed this problem goes away)
  10. Close the Crossover window askin to install apps. and type exit followed-by the Enter key to close the Terminal.
  11. If you now right-click anywhere on your desktop, you get the Xfce4 Menu.
  12. Click on System...Menu Editor.
  13. Click Add Entry, leave the type as Launcher, in the Name box say "Crossover" and for command use /mnt/home/cxoffice/bin/cxbottlemanager
  14. Accept those settings, and then Click SAVE on the top button to save the menu. Close the window.
  15. Now if you right-click on the Desktop again, simply click "Crossover" (towards the top) and the manager opens

You can now install Windows software as per your needs.

To create a launcher for your windows apps, follow the same method for adding the Crossover icon to the right-click Desktop menu. Your app launcher will be in /mnt/home/cxoffice/bin/"yourappname" as an executable.

For those wanting to create a proper "Acer" menu item on the desktop, simply edit /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/group-app.xml to add a new line for your app in the right menu item, and link to the icon and executable (FOR ADVANCED USERS ONLY!) If you break this XML file your desktop could be unusable. The XML layout is self-explanatory but Google it and you will find more info.

Finally, remember this machine is NOT built to be powerful. You add windows programs and Office etc at your own risk, which may result in very, very long load times.

Please Note: This Forum is for non-application specific questions relating to installation/configuration of CrossOver. All application-specific posts to this Forum will be moved to their appropriate Compatibility Center Forum.
