Nothing works after recent ubuntu 11.10 update

Hi

After a recent run of the update-manager on my ubuntu 11.10 system, crossover is completely toasted. Pretty much nothing works anymore. Smells to me, as though it's missing a library/package since the update, although the Package Manager says that there are no missing dependencies. Reinstalled crossover, same problem. Any help is much appreciated.

Crossover version was 10.2, I upgraded to trial 11.2, same problem.

Symptoms:

  • all Windows application associations are still present in Gnome, but no Windows application can be started - clicking on any windows program in Nautilus or on the Desktop does nothing
  • all bottles and files therein are still present in ~/.cxoffice/.../
  • crossover gui still starts, eg. 'install software' or 'manage bottles' starts ok, all bottles are shown, but there are no installed applications in any bottle any more, control panel is blank, browsing c:/ does nothing
  • creating a new bottle fails with: setup:error: 'rundll32 DefaultInstall crossover.inf' failed
  • installing any software does not work, it starts but just sits there with no progress right from the start- cxrun from the command line fails with 'segmentation fault'
  • cxdiag output seems harmless

A few things that might help... can you run cxdiag with the '--debug' flag added?

What version of python are your running?

What Windows application are you trying to run?

Many thanks for your response.

I have been running MS Office 2003 successfully for over a year - until now. That's pretty much all, the others are nice-to-have.

I wonder if there's been some sort of corruption with your bottles directory, itself. What happens if you move ~/.cxoffice over to ~/.old_cxoffice, then run the uninstall

/opt/cxoffice/bin/cxuninstall

followed by

sudo /opt/cxoffice/bin/cxuninstall

then re-install the 11.2.1 demo, and try to install a random app (or even create a plain bottle)? Anything?

Thanks for the suggestion - unfortunately, the same error occurs after de- and then reinstallation:

setup:error: 'rundll32 DefaultInstall crossover.inf' failed
cxbottle:error: unable to create the 'New Bottle' bottle in '/home/andrev/.cxoffice/New Bottle'

/opt/cxoffice/bin/cxuninstall and sudo /opt/cxoffice/bin/cxuninstall work ok.
Afterwards, Manage Bottles window shows that no bottles are installed. Creating a new bottle fails with the same error. Running the command manually with --verbose :

/opt/cxoffice/bin$ /opt/cxoffice/bin/cxbottle --bottle 'new xp test bottle' --create --verbose --template winxp --install CXConfig->read(/opt/cxoffice/etc/cxoffice.conf)
CXConfig->read(/home/andrev/.cxoffice/cxoffice.conf)

15897: Got the '/tmp/.wine-1000/bottle-fd02-40e058.lock' lock
Running '/opt/cxoffice/share/crossover/bottle_templates/winxp/setup' '--create'
sh: getcwd() failed: No such file or directory
setup:error: 'rundll32 DefaultInstall crossover.inf' failed
