I cannot believe that I am the only one having any problems with World of Warcraft. Just recently they have sent either a battlenet update or released a patch which then causes only a black screen to be displayed.

This is only complicated by Blizzard actually having some problems being reported by people with logins.

My setup

Linux Mint 20.1 x 64 bit  
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Super  
Nvidia driver 460  

I have tried a number of things to try and find out what the problem is.

Mint

reinstall battle net component  
remove cache values from game ../cache/*

run cxdiag and try and reinstall all "missing" packages  
this was unfortunately left.  (most of the others missing were found on codeweaver site as troubleshooting)

on a new partition install OS (Ubuntu) and install Warcraft (nvidia 460 driver)  
use nouveau display drver

What is interesting is on the Ubuntu installation. I went through the entire process of the install. I waited until everything was downloaded and I could see at the bottom of the screen a new version of battlenet was available restart needed. I then ignored that and pressed play. The game started up with no problems. I closed the game (perhaps rebooted) and restarted game. I then get the same behavior with the black screen.

I did more poking around on the Mint side and I did find this as well which does seem to point towards the problem.

I cannot tell if Blizzard has problems with their software or something is a problem with communication on my computer but blizzard seems to believe that this is due to permissions. (https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/19031)

Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated. (I did try world of warcraft on a windows machine and it does connect there is nothing wrong with my account)

World of Warcraft shortcut

If I run the shortcut for the game itself, I get a tiny window that displays a small scale hat says "starting battle.net", after a short bit the text changes to "Downloading new files". The scale never really shows any advancement, then a window comes up saying

"We're having trouble launching the Blizzard Update Agent. Please
wait one minute and try again. if it happens again, try restarting
your computer or reinstalling Battle.net."

I then click on the close button and that dialog goes away.

During this process I see about 20-30% CPU usage across most cores but almost no network usage.

Battle.net shortcut

It opens the login dialog, but i had said in a previous step to keep me logged in. Thus I do not need to enter any credentials. Then almost immediately it open
s up a window which I presume is the game itself but the title on the top of the window is "Blizzard Battle.net"

During this there is a brief spike of cpu and no network usage.

Okay, thanks, this sounds like a known issue with latest update to the Battle.net client. We have a bug tracking this issue, as it also affects running the game with wine, but I do have a workaround you can try out in the meantime. If you right click on the small Battle.net tray icon that appears when launching the Battle.net client, then select Settings, and then uncheck "Use browser hardware acceleration," the Battle.net client should render again, allowing you to then launch WoW.

Hi. I am trying to install Battle.net on Ubuntu 20.04 and am running into the same issue with the Update Agent. Is there a way around it to install?

I have not seen this issue in a while, but have you tried installing DXVK into the same bottle as your battle.net and WoW? Are you using an older bottle that is working in 32-bit as win xp or vista, or the newer recipe using a 64 bit Win 10 ?
