Hi all, new to Wine & Crossover, think it's pretty cool...

I installed my first app (LTSpice IV) and it runs fine, I noticed in File/Open that it can see my entire MacOS volume - all files & folders - is there a way to restrict Win apps to a specific folder on my Mac so that the folder appears to be the root of the Win "hard drive"?

Have to admit I was a bit horrified that a Win app can see my entire Mac volume.

I can also see my entire volume by running CMD and getting a DOS prompt (dir command, etc.).

My Mac is running Mojave 10.14.6 and I'm running Crossover for Mac version 19.0.1 (19.0.1.32209).

Don't be horrified 😀 - I don't think you change that.

You can remove the direct access by manually renaming or moving the dosdevices folder to some place outside your bottle.

Well I tried deleting the dosdevices folder, next time I run the bottle it just gets created again...

I tried removing the linked files to those other than c:, that causes the app to not run!

I tried using the Wine Configuration/Desktop Integration to remove the "link to's" but there is still a link to the root of the file system defined somewhere in WINE, so with file/open I can still navigate through my entire Mac volume.

I've dug around the WINE configuration info I find by googling but haven't found anything that would accomplish what I'm trying to do...

Well per Support - this currently cannot be done. Windows will always be able to access the entire Mac volume. Per Support the only way to accomplish the Windows containment is to dual boot (BootCamp) or to run a VM...bummer...

As I'm not willing to allow Win to access my entire Mac volume, WINE oriented solutions won't work for me - until WINE (and therefore apps like Crossover) add a way to restrict Win access on a Mac volume.

I think you are overthinking and overreacting - Windows is not a big evil corp - they are just a big corp good at making money.

Just like Google, Amazon, Lenovo, Alibaba, Apple - and the list continues.

Unless you - purposely - expose your Windows app on Wine to malware - there is no problem.

We all know how malware works

• we use proper judgment in our web activities
• we don't open attachments we did not expect
• we stay away from questionable web content
• we disable macro processing for unknown documents

Another though - a Windows application - installed on a Windows system has access to the full system.

The same Windows application run on Mac or Linux using Wine should be restricted?

This is an unreasonable expectation. 😀
