I downloaded the free version of crossover. I also downloaded civilization 4 on my Macbook, but I go to click on it and it pops up the crossover menu. How do I play the game? Do I need to buy crossover?

As long as Civilization IV is the Steam version (http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=1728) you simply need to install it through Steam into CrossOver. There is no need to buy to try it out but if you decide you like CrossOver you will need to purchase it to keep it running (CrossOver Games only has a trial period of 7 days).
