CrossOver Mac or CrossOver Mac Games

Dear people,

I have an iMac 20" Alluminium (december 2007) running Leopard and an Packard Bell laptop running Ubuntu 8.04. Both with the latest updates installed.

I've tried CrossOver Mac some time ago (a few months) and it didn't really was my favorite with games like Guild Wars and Diablo II LoD. When the game goes to full screen it would just hang. Even my music played further but there was no possible OSX key combination that worked to get back, so I had (what never happend on my iMac before) to hard reset :o.

In my Windows time I used some software (mostly games), I will list some of them:

  • The Temple of Elemental Evil

  • The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

  • Fable: The Lost Chapters

  • Diablo II + Lord of Destruction

  • Myst V: End of Ages (no the Hybrid disc doesn't work on OSX, not even with the OSX patch, was made for Jaguar...)

  • Septerra Core

  • Wacom JustWrite Office (will this 'even' work with the USB pen-tablet?)

  • Internet Explorer 7

  • Windows Media Player 11 (+ the security browser plugin (codec) to play some commercial website's movies. For watching soccer games by Planet.nl (KPN))

  • Oracle Jinitiator (already worked out with IE6 for me :) )

I mainly use my PlayStation3 for games, but to bad not all games I like are available on it and mostly they cost always more then Windows based games. With Mac games this is the same high-price case.

I assume CrossOver Games Mac is a ripped version of CrossOver Mac? If I want to use general software to, do I need to have the normal CrossOver Mac then?

Regards,

Erwin

For the games, you can try our CrossOver Games trial and see if they work they way you want. We've improved Guild Wars a lot in cxgames.

I think CrossOver Mac currently includes CrossOver Games, as per the announcement mails. We're debating about separating the products more, so better ask at sales@codeweavers.com before you buy, or maybe Jeremy can clarify it here.

Ok thanks!

I'm currently testing my games and some software in some different bottles.

I will post the my findings later today. Is support good at CodeWeavers? I mean, if a game doesn't work because of a glitch and I will file the issue, can I count on some improvement in like -within then and 3 months- ?

Regards

Since I am a CodeWeavers employee I of course say the support is good 😊

Realistically, it depends on the sort of glitch and the game how long it takes to fix something. I can't promise that we'll fix everything within 3 months, because (a) we are always quite busy, (b) some things like GameGuard or StarForce copy protection are probably not fixable in a legal way, and (c) some issues come from other software like the graphics driver, or are bugs in the Windows game.

If something that is supposed to work, we will help you to get it working, for example if the problem is caused by a configuration issue of your computer. If you have an issue with an unsupported game, we'll try to help you if the available time permits it. However, with unsupported games there are often issues where all I can do is to file a bug in our bugtracker and ask you to vote for this game if you want it running and keep trying with later CrossOver versions. If there's a problem with a supported game that is a bug in CrossOver, we'll try to fix it with the next release. There may be exceptions if the bug happens only with a rare setup(e.g. missing pixel shader support on old graphics cards like GeForce 3 cards), or is not fixable by us(e.g. driver bug)

Ok :)

Well, these are my first results on CrossOver Mac Games:

Guild Wars
• Bottle: win2000
• Result: Runs great at 1680x1050 at high-ress (no anti-aliasing possible), also sound is good and crack-less

Temple of elemental Evil
• Bottle: win2000
• Result: Installation was flawless. Only when tried to launch it keeps asking for the Play disc (while it's inserted and mounted)

Myth: End of Ages
• Bottle: win2000
• Result: InstallShield-wizard (X11) pop-up: The installer is unable to run in graphical mode. Try running the installer with the -console or -silent flag. (don't know yet how to do that, skipped first).

Fable: The Lost Chapters
• Bottle: win2000
• Result: Invalid CD Key! (X11) pop-up (but it's the good one): Error loading the PID Generator DLL. The DLL could not be found! Please make sure the file is available in the installation directory and try again.

The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
• Bottle: winxp
• Result: Full Screen (default settings) results in running intro the main menu, but the controls don't work. Windowed mode results in an inactive white screen

Diablo II + Lord of Destruction
• Bottle: win2000
• Result: Not able to start installation because of the Hybrid disc that disturbs the loading of the Windows side of the CD-ROM..

Internet Explorer 7
• Bottle: winxp
• Result: Gives an error about wrong rights and that it can't unpack..

Ya, that's the only supported app in your list 😊

I guess the copy protection driver doesn't work ☹️

No idea... you can check c4.codeweavers.com for hints.

I guess the keygen verifier needs mfc42.dll but doesn't ship it. You can look for the Microsoft Foundation Class reditributable on the MS website and install it in the bottle.

See c4.codeweavers.com. The result of this app depends heavily on the driver

Ken wrote a HOWTO somewhere how to mount the Windows side. I recommend to just run the Mac version though. I think it has advantages like supporting a higher resolution than the Windows version, but I am not sure about this.

That one is on our todo list. We have to implement clusapi.dll for this app.

It's working great on OSX. Problem is that after Classic support was dropped the OpenGL driver isn't compatible anymore. What does this mean for OSX: Only 800x600 resolution, no perspective option, no shadows, no 3d effects. So I was hoping that would maybe work out in the CrossOver bottle.
I used Diablo in a Wine win98 bottle last year some time on Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10. It worked out great, that's why I hoped on this to function to :)

I think I'll wait a bit longer on buying CrossOver due the low compatibility for my situation and do some more demo testing first. I heard there were even rumors that after OSX Leopard Apple would make a completely new naming system for the next version that will also work with new system-handling-methods. There in some people rumor that they will maybe support Windows API to so .exe and .msi execution is possible. Some sort of Bootcamp idea without Windows but also with loaded OpenSource Windows-like Library's (like in WINE). :) But anyhow, in whatever case, it will take at least another 1,5 year to see what it will result in. Maybe they'll call your office :D (just kidding :P).

WINE already pleased me on Linux and CrossOver also is on a very nice path to compatibility :D.

Wine(which CrossOver uses) has been in development since 15 years, and not even Microsoft can get compatibility right between Windows versions, so I seriously doubt Apple just adds support for the Windows API within 1.5 years 😉 . All they could do in that timeframe is bundle Wine with OSX.
