Anyone had any luck getting these working under CrossOver?  I install them via steam, the launcher starts, I click Homeworld 1 (or 2), screen goes black then... nothing...

Thanks in advance.

Usually, it's a good idea to post system details even for the simple reason that it may help narrow down issues to a group of hardware configurations. CPU but most importantly GPU and OS versions are important.

Being Mac, I presume that Michael was probably talking about Mavericks or Yosemite.

I would love to know whether the game runs here too. Could save a whole load of memory when it comes to not having to install Windows.

In-house, we cannot get it to run on MacOS 10.10 or 10.9, AMD, Intel, and Nvidia.

It runs nicely on Linux, Ubuntu 14.04, Nvidia.

Hi all,

Thanks for the detail.  This is my spec:

OSX Yosemite 10.10.2
iMac 27"
3.4 GHz intel i7
32gb DDR3 RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB

It also fails under Parallels Windows 8 so I am not sure the issue is entirely emulation related.

Edit:  Seems an issue for many Windows users as well:

Wine and CrossOver don't emulate a Windows environment, but rather provide a compatibility layer where commands are translated between the system's API and what the program expects (or that's my understanding). An emulator, like Parallels, actually emulates the hardware itself so the programs are communicating with an operating environment that is talking to fake hardware.

Hi,

The problem here is quite simple.  The game only runs under Vista and Windows 7, according to the system requirements on the Steampowered page here:

Hi folks,

Homeworld Remastered won't currently run on Parallels 10 or below, because the game requires OpenGL v3.3 (see system requirements here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/244160) and Parallels currently only supports v2.1.  The good news is that the Parallels folks are working on providing OpenGL 3.  See reference here:
http://kb.parallels.com/en/115487

I don't know if Crossover relies on the built-in OpenGL drivers of the host operating system, but if it does, then all Macs from 2007 should be compatible according to this page:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202823
Therefore, we may be able rule out Mac OS X OpenGL compatibility problems from our issues list (though not conclusively), because....

.....the following page shows that different Macs have different graphics chips, which afford different OpenGL feature-level compatibilities:
https://developer.apple.com/opengl/capabilities/
Therefore, even if your Mac says it's OpenGL 3.3 compatible on the tin, when you look inside it may be missing a few tricks.

Hi,
Can you confirm it works under Parallel Win7?  If so I'll happily install win7 as well.

Thanks.

CrossOver uses the OpenGL drivers provided by the system. There is no other way to access 3D acceleration otherwise.

CrossOver supports OpenGL 3 and 4, but so far only on Linux. We recently (1-2 months ago) fixed a few bugs that prevented it from working on OSX. These changes will become available in the next major CrossOver release.

The other problem is that Homeworld requires OpenGL compatibility contexts that provide OpenGL 3 features at the same time. OSX drivers don't support this, their compatibility contexts are limited to OpenGL 2. We may be able to emulate enough of this to make the game happy, but I can't promise that it will work.

Sorry, nothing substantial yet. This is a complicated issue, not quick to fix.

Thanks.  I figured it wasn't something straightforward that's why my comments are months apart :)
