X-Wing Alliance will effectively not run if it doesn't detect a joystick - posts an error with the only option being to quit the game. When I connect my USB joystick to my mac, I'm able to see it in my bottle's Game Controller settings, and testing the joystick there also succeeds. But the game still thinks I don't have a joystick.
When trying to get the game to run in VirtualBox, I learned that I had to create a specific device filter for the joystick and it had to then be plugged in after the VM was running in order for the VM to "grab" the device before OS X. That worked for VirtualBox - Is there some analog I can do for Crossover to get the game to recognize the joystick?
Unfortunately not. I don't know what VirtualBox does exactly, but I suspect it is grabbing the raw USB device and taking it away from the Linux/Mac driver to pass it to the guest OS. In the case of CrossOver we always go through the Linux/Mac joystick driver. Since you see the joystick in CrossOver's Joystick config tool this part works.
I suspect what's preventing this game from working is a bug in our dinput.dll implementation. It may also be a problem with winmm.dll, which has some ancient joystick API.
